WIND:
A High Wind Warning has been issued for Island county and north and along the coast from 7 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday for sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts potentially as high as 60 mph in the most wind-prone areas before subsiding later in the day Saturday.
Elsewhere around Puget Sound, including the Everett-Seattle-Tacoma corridor, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday for sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts of 45 in many spots and possibly 55 mph in the most wind-prone areas along the water.
Since it’s has been a while since there’s been a wind event of this magnitude, power outages are expected. In addition, those with outdoor holiday decorations would be wise to secure them well before dark Friday evening.
For many of us, the strongest wind will be felt from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday. By midday Saturday, it will still be breezy but the strongest winds will have passed.
RAIN:
We’ll have increasing lowland rain Friday afternoon and evening with mountain snow picking up. The heaviest rainfall will be Friday night and Saturday morning, with many lowland locations picking up more than a half-inch of rain. The rain tapers to showers in the lowlands later in the day Saturday.
Rain will further taper in the lowlands as the day goes on Sunday, though the chance will be there Sunday afternoon and evening of an isolated thunderstorm around the region. Highs will be in the 40s this weekend in the lowlands.
As for rivers, heavy rain over the south slopes of the Olympic Mountains could push the Skokomish River in Mason County to moderate flood stage early Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.
Flooding on other rivers is not expected due to somewhat low snow levels.
MOUNTAIN SNOW:
In the mountains, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the Friday evening-weekend time frame. This will be the heaviest snow event of the season so far for the Cascades and Olympics with one to three feet of new snow – including all the mountain passes.
Expect pass closures at times from late Friday through the weekend. Also Friday night through Saturday morning, winds will be gusty in the mountains, creating whiteout conditions that will further limit the ability to travel through the passes.
By Sunday, mountain snow will continue though perhaps not as hard as on Saturday, but pass travel will still be very difficult to potentially impossible at times.
NEXT WEEK:
Next week, we appear to have less moisture around the region, but it will be unseasonably cold with lows in the 30s and highs only in the low 40s. Snow levels are likely to be pretty low (below 1,000 feet) and some snow could mix in with rain just about at any time.
It is too early to know if we’ll have enough cold air and moisture to have any lowland snow accumulations, but at this time there does not look to be a high probability of a major lowland snow event next week.
