U.S. men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter on Friday named 26 players to a young, almost entirely domestic-based roster that will play Bosnia and Herzegovina in a friendly at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. on Dec. 18.
Fifteen of the 26 players are age 20 or younger and 12 have never before appeared in a match for the USMNT. With European leagues still in season, the roster is dominated by domestic-based players, with 21 coming from MLS clubs, two coming from USL sides and three coming from foreign teams.
“It’s been a great year for the group and our objective is to finish the year with a strong performance against Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Berhalter said in a statement issued by U.S. Soccer. “As we look towards 2022, this camp gives us the opportunity to see some new faces and allows our core domestic players to maintain their fitness levels.”
While most of the group is inexperienced on the international level, the roster does include several players who have played significant recent roles for the USMNT in goalkeeper Matt Turner, center back Walker Zimmerman, midfielders Kellyn Acosta and Cristian Roldan and strikers Ricardo Pepi and Gyasi Zardes. This camp also marks the return of center back Aaron Long and winger Jordan Morris to the national team following lengthy injury layoffs in 2021.
Some of the more intriguing youngsters on the roster are 17-year-old goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina, 18-year-old defenders Justin Che and Jonathan Gomez and 18-year-old attackers Caden Clark and Cade Cowell. Gomez and Clark are both set for European moves next month, with Gomez due to join Spanish club Real Sociedad from USL team Louisville City and Clark scheduled to move to German club RB Leipzig from sister club New York Red Bulls.
Players will begin reporting to Southern California for camp on Sunday, with training set to begin on Monday. This camp is mainly meant to serve as a bridge for domestic-based players between the recent end of their league season and the USMNT’s next round of World Cup qualifiers in late January and early February. The USMNT will also have another extended training camp that will likely begin around Jan. 10 for domestic players ahead of that next round of qualifiers.
