The PEZ Gift Guide: Heavy Pedal – ‘Faster By Design’, Adidas sunglasses, give the gift of better rides – Ride with GPS, WAHOO: Lowest prices of the year! Heavy Pedal – ‘Faster By Design’

If you’re on Facebook, there’s a good chance you’ve seen a sponsored post by Heavy Pedal. Their tagline is “Faster By Design.” Which means:

There isn’t a technology-based or wind-tunnel tested background or any other hype related to our definition. We challenged the status quo and pushed the boundaries of what a cycling kit could/should look like. We still do.

This decision allowed people that thought cycling kits were boring ad placements to actually find a garment that fit their style and personality. Once you finally get over your fear of spandex and put on a cycling jersey and bib shorts you naturally start to take your riding more seriously. In time you get “Faster.” All of this happens because of the “Design” that lured you into Heavy Pedal in the first place.

Speed Jersey – $95

heavy pedal

  • 50% Polyester / 50% Cool Dry Fabric
  • Ventilated side panels
  • Perforated elastic arm bands
  • Full Length Invisible YKK Zipper
  • Three Rear Pockets
  • Rubber Gripper on Bottom Hem to Minimize Fabric Slip
  • Low Collar
  • Quick Dry

Speed Bib – $105

heavy pedal

  • 85% Polyester / 15% Spandex
  • Sweat Wicking Material
  • Italian Elastic leg band
  • Flatlock stitching
  • Upgraded 4D chamois
  • Heat press logo
  • Quick Dry
  • Breathable Upper Mesh

Chuck Peña PEZ sez: The Speed jersey and bibs are part of Heavy Pedal’s Attack collection. Fittingly, PEZ got the “As long as I breathe, I attack” edition of the kit — so I guess I’ll have to channel my inner badger when I wear it. Size-wise, Heavy Pedal’s recommendation based on my height (5’8″), weight (130 pounds), and build (ectomorph) was XS. I usually wear size small in all my other kit, but the XS fit me well. Which is to say race fit without having overly tight/constricting compression. I’m guessing I could probably wear size small, but the fit would be a “looser” more “club” fit.

heavy pedal
The Speed design/graphics create a bit of a camouflage effect

Heavy Pedal is based in Phoenix, AZ so it’s not surprising that the Speed jersey and bibs are warm/hot weather kit. Some nice touches are mesh side panels on the jersey for ventilation and the sleeve ends are a laser cut elasticized mesh. The full-zip zipper is YKK — the gold standard of zippers. The bibs have 7-panels (in the shorts section) with flat-stitched seams. The bib section is all mesh (but not laser cut, lay flat straps — although still comfortable and didn’t cut into my shoulders) for ventilation. Honestly, it’s a fair amount of bang-for-the-buck at this price point — $200 for jersey and bibs.

heavy pedal
I’m not sure if Bernard Hinault would wear this kit, but he’d probably agree with the sentiment

Smudge Jersey – $45

heavy pedal

  • 50% Polyester / 50% Cool Dry Fabric
  • Sweat Free
  • Quick Dry
  • Ventilated
  • Full Length Invisible YKK Zipper
  • Three Rear Pockets
  • Reflective Tab Below Rear Pockets
  • Rubber Gripper on Bottom Hem to Minimize Fabric Slip
  • Low Collar

Tempo Bib – $55

heavy pedal

  • 85% Polyester / 15% Spandex
  • Flatlock Stitched
  • Sweat Wicking Material
  • Quick Dry
  • Breathable Upper Mesh
  • Italian Elastic leg band
  • 3D Foam Chamois

Chuck Peña PEZ sez: This is part of Heavy Pedal’s Tempo collection. And if the Attack collection is a lot of bang-for-the-buck, then the Tempo collection is a value buy for those on an even more limited budget:

We believe cycling promotes a healthy lifestyle and positive mindset. While we can’t give everything away for free, we wanted to help keep cycling accessible to everyone. That’s why we released the Tempo collection, a $100 complete cycling kit (jersey and bib). We didn’t cut any corners to make it affordable either (we even upgraded the bib). Cycling should be for everyone and we will continue to do our part to keep it that way.

The Smudge jersey is made with the same material as the Speed jersey (and uses a YKK zipper), but doesn’t have the ventilated side panels or laser cut sleeve ends (instead, fold over serge-stitched). But the overall fit is the same, i.e., comfortable race fit. Construction-wise, the Tempo bib is the same as the  Speed bib, i.e., 7 panels with flat-stitched seams. And the soft leg grippers are the same as the Speed bib. What’s different is the chamois (3D vs 4D). Also different is the bib section — it’s a tighter weave, less open mesh than the Speed bib.

heavy pedal
It was 30-something degrees (but at least sunny) taking these pics. The Smudge jersey had me daydreaming about being in South Beach.

It’s almost winter here in Babylon on the Potomac, so I haven’t had a chance to test the Heavy Pedal kit on outdoor rides yet. But I’ve done a few indoor trainer sessions in the kit. My butt didn’t have any complaints with either the set of bibs (in some ways, 45-60 minutes indoors in the saddle at the mercy of a smart trainer forcing you to ride at prescribed power levels is as good a test as several hours outdoors).

You’ll just have to decide whether Heavy Pedal’s designs, graphics, and colors are to your liking. Not all, but a lot of their kit is what I would describe as edgy … urban … loud … dare I say even “hip”? I think it’s fair to say that their target demographic is not my PEZ pals Ed, Al, and Leslie. But I’m game for having a go in it.

heavy pedal
Heavy Pedal also does socks

Is Heavy Pedal the same as more expensive “name brand” kit? No. But don’t confuse its lower price points (especially the Tempo kit) with “cheap” quality. It’s more than up to snuff for serious riding. Not everyone can afford to drop big bux on kit (especially multiple sets of kit). Heavy Pedal is a brand that gives you options for stretching your dollar. And if you decide to buy any Heavy Pedal kit right now:

Adidas SP0041 Sunglasses$180

adidas

adidas

The SP0041 is a reverse half-rim flexible frame born to compete with rubber end-tips and no-slip contact points on the temples to provide a perfect and secure fit. The half-rim construction maximizes ventilation and new adjustable nose pads with low relief sweat drainers add to this frame’s performance. Vario photochromic lenses, made with a patented molded-in film technology, ensure the highest optical quality and a uniform color transition in varying light conditions. And a Super clear coating protects mirrored lenses from water, dirt, grease, and oily smears making them easy to clean.

Chuck Peña PEZ sez: These sunglasses are part of a new collection that adidas dropped in November:

The collection is built on the brand’s cornerstone of durability, lightweight performance, and comfort with insights in design from adidas athletes. The 2022 adidas Sport Eyewear is poised to set the bar through styles manufactured according to its outstanding technological tradition and the continuous study of innovative designs based on a vision of inclusive and sustainable sports.

adidas

In keeping with BIG being what’s considered pro and fashionable these days, the SP0041s are definitely that … but not Dame Edna ski-goggle oversized (at least not on my face, which I wouldn’t consider large). So you’ll definitely look the part wearing them. Style is always in the eye of the beholder, but IMHO the angular shaped lens/frame is stylish and different from a lot of the other premium sunglasses. And if red is your favorite color, then these are the droids you’re looking for — the only color choice for the SP0041 is a red frame with a red mirrored lens. NOTE: The lens is photochromatic so gets darker when exposed to sunlight, but it has a fairly decent tint to begin with. So it’s not really suitable for low light conditions. For that, adidas provides a second clear lens. Finally, at just 28 grams, the SP0041s won’t weigh you down on a ride.

Brooks Migration Gravel Race C17 in Support of the AMANI Project
Limited-Edition Saddle to Support AMANI Project for African Cyclists

brooks

The latest special-edition saddle from Brooks England celebrates Kenya’s first official gravel event, the Migration Gravel Race, which celebrated its first exciting edition in 2021welcoming top gravel riders from Africa and around the globe in an effort to raise the profile of cycling in Kenya and increase opportunities for African cyclists.

Limited to just 50 pieces, the Brooks C17 Migration Gravel Race saddle is an homage to the AMANI Project’s Timu Moja campaign. The term, meaning “One team” in the Swahili language widely spoken in East Africa, conveys the idea that in the drive for greater inclusivity in cycling, success for one East African cyclist, team or race organization is success for all. Brooks identifies with the spirit of the Migration Gravel Race, and by purchasing this limited edition saddle you’ll be directly supporting the Maasai in their effort to maintain their beautiful cultural practices as well as the AMANI project in their laudable goal of making the sport of cycling more accessible to athletes from East Africa.

Following MGR2021, AMANI seeks to create cycling opportunities for the Maasai in particular through rider sponsorships and, along with professional Kenyan riders, host a series of workshops at local schools where the riders could talk about how they came to be professional cyclists and encourage kids to take up cycling.

The Migration Cambium features a colorful design inspired by the event and comes in a special set including a beautiful beaded saddle charm handmade by local Maasai craftspeople, with no two charms exactly alike. Along with this, each set comes with documentary film photo prints from the inaugural 2021 event.
