HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Here’s a look at some of the impacts and weather alerts from a severe weather system that’s bringing heavy rains and strong winds to the state.
OAHU
- A flash flood warning has been issued for Oahu as a band of heavy showers moves over the island. Forecasters warn rain rates of 2 to 3 inches an hour are possible.
- A wind advisory is in effect for all islands, with southerly winds around 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph.
- The city has closed all city parks, the Honolulu Zoo and other venues because of the severe weather.
- The DOE says all schools except Pearl City Highlands Elementary School and Farrington High will be open Tuesday. Pearl City Highlands Elementary reported extensive flooding on campus, while Farrington is closed because of a large downed tree on campus.
- Four emergency shelters have been opened on Oahu: Kalakaua District Park, Makaha Community Park, Sunset Beach Recreation Center and Kailua District Park.
MAUI COUNTY
- A wind advisory is in effect for all islands, with southerly winds around 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph.
- All public schools in Maui County are closed Monday in anticipation of more severe weather.
- Shelters open at the Kihei Community Center.
- Kamehameha Schools’ Maui and Hawaii Island campuses, preschools and offices will also be closed.
- All Maui County offices are also closed today. County employees are urged not to report to work.
- Public libraries throughout the county are closed.
- All Second Circuit Courts in Maui County are closed.
- A shelter has also been opened in south Maui for those impacted by heavy rains and flooding. The shelter is located at the Kihei Community Center.
HAWAII COUNTY
- A wind advisory is in effect for all islands, with southerly winds around 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph.
- Hawaii County’s mayor declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm.
- Shelters opened at Pahala Community Center, Naalehu Community Center and Keeau Armory.
- Kamehameha Schools’ Maui and Hawaii Island campuses, preschools and offices will be closed.
- Mountain View Elementary is closed Monday.
- All county beaches are closed.
- The Hilo Driver Licensing Office is closed.
KAUAI
- A flood advisory has been issued for Kauai.
- A wind advisory is in effect for all islands, with southerly winds around 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph.
