From today’s Down in Alabama podcast:
... Incidentally, if any of y’all are spending today anywhere on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, be aware that there will be a high risk of rip currents until tonight, when it it supposed to change to moderate.
If you ever do get caught in a rip current, it’s going to pull you away from shore. Don’t get panicked and don’t wear yourself out trying to swim straight back in. Michael Phelps might struggle to swim against some rips.
It’s not going to try to suck you under. It’s going to pull you away from the beach, maybe a pretty good distance, but you won’t keep going forever.
Stay calm, stay afloat, and try to move parallel to the beach. When you get outside the rip start angling toward the beach and riding the waves back in.
(I realize that this is easier to say and remember when the Gulf’s not pulling you out a few feet a second.)
On today’s news briefing we’ll talk about drowning and safety issues on the Fort Morgan peninsula. We’ll also talk about a new Interstate 10 project and capital punishment by nitrogen hypoxia. Not exactly the lightest of episodes, I realize.
