SAGINAW TWP, MI — A Saginaw Township business-owning family is facing dozens of felonies for reportedly stealing heavy-duty machinery from around the state.
Police on Tuesday, June 22, arrested husband and wife Andrew J. Csongradi, 50, and Julie A. Csongradi, 52, and their 23-year-old son, Zackary A. Csongradi. The family owns Zackary Electric, located at 7897 McCarty Road.
Saginaw Township Police Chief Donald F. Pussehl Jr. said that back in March, his officers were contacted by Livonia police officers who were investigating the theft of a Bobcat from a work site. A transmitter on the Bobcat indicated it was at the family’s business, Pussehl said.
“Officers went out there and confirmed there were several pieces of stolen equipment on that property,” the chief said. “None of it was stolen from within Saginaw Township. It was all from other work sites throughout the state, maybe as far as Ohio.”
Pussehl described the equipment as being excavators, front-end loaders, backhoes, a Caterpillar, and the like.
Michigan State Police coordinated the investigation with Saginaw Township police and other agencies, Pussehl said. Police recovered five pieces of equipment and have evidence the Csongradis possessed a sixth such piece at one point, prosecutors added.
“They were all involved in the operation where they stole this equipment and were keeping it at their house,” Pussehl said. “They had repainted some and tried taking the serial numbers off of some of them.”
Prosecutors and Pussehl declined to comment on if the Csongradis were reselling the equipment or using them for their own purposes.
Authorities issued warrants for the three Csongradis on June 22, the day of their arrest. The next morning, they appeared before Saginaw County District Judge M. Randall Jurrens for arraignment on a combined 24 charges.
Andrew Csongradi is charged with six counts of larceny by conversion, five counts of receiving and concealing more than $20,000 in stolen property, and one count of false pretenses over $20,000. Julie Csongradi and Zackary Csongradi each face five counts of receiving and concealing more than $20,000 in stolen property and one count of false pretenses over $20,000.
The false pretenses charge is a 15-year felony, while the other two charges are both punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Jurrens set Andrew Csongradi’s bond at $24,000 cash-surety or 10%. The judge freed both Julie and Zackary Csongradi on $12,000 personal recognizance bonds with day reporting.
The trio is to appear for a preliminary examination at 3 p.m. on July 14.
