In an ideal world, Justin Fields will become the long-awaited franchise quarterback of the Chicago Bears.
There’s plenty of reason to indicate that Fields could become “the man” under center for the Bears. His pinpoint accuracy, his strong arm, his poise under pressure, his rare athletic ability, and his character in the locker room all point to the possibility that he becomes a quality starting quarterback in the NFL. Having moved up nine spots in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft to take him, the Bears certainly have hope that he can do exactly that after a stellar collegiate career.
However, if I had the opportunity to add a current player from another team onto the Bears’ roster, it would be Patrick Mahomes, and I would not think twice about it.
Though he only has three seasons as a starting quarterback in the NFL, Mahomes has already solidified himself as one of, if not the most talented quarterback in league history. He has incredible arm strength and is able to hit throws from any angle to any part of the field with velocity and precision. His accuracy is impeccable, and his ability to thrive both in and out of structure is commendable. He faces a high bar to top to have the most accomplished career of any quarterback in league history, but if there’s any current player who can reach that mark of the greatest of all time, he is absolutely the answer.
Mahomes’ start to his career is arguably the best start to an NFL career that any quarterback can possibly have. After sitting on the bench for all but one of his games in his rookie year, he has been named a Pro Bowl for every year he has started and has two All-Pros to his name. After making it to the AFC Championship in 2018, he has made consecutive Super Bowl appearances and led the Chiefs to victory in the first of the two.
With 14,152 passing yards, 114 touchdowns and a 38-8 record in his 46 games as a regular season starter, Mahomes has dominated from the get-go and has elevated the Chiefs from a perennial Wild Card contender to a legitimate powerhouse. With Tom Brady’s reign of terror over the AFC having come to a close, one can make a strong argument that the conference now runs through Mahomes and Kansas City.
Though I’m on record as being a major proponent for the Bears’ selection of Fields, having the chance to add the best quarterback in the NFL who, by the way, is still just 25 years old would be an opportunity too tantalizing to pass up.
A Mahomes trade seems like the most unrealistic trade that can possibly be made in the NFL today. In a fantasy land where I have the chance to add one current player from a different team, though, he would absolutely be my choiceZ
