If you’ll allow me a moment of honesty, I spent more time today looking for birds in the Arboretum and trying to keep up with a surprisingly speedy eight-year-old than I did watching this game. She’s moving soon, and as the days tumble forward it’s become more real that we won’t get to see her grow up in the same way now. So, with apologies to y’aLL and Logan Gilbert, Mariners baseball was not the priority this morning.

All things considered, though, it was an excellent game! Gilbert was the star of the day, shoving his way into the seventh inning for the first time in his fledgling major league career. He generated a ton of swings and misses and now, per Goose in today’s Game Thread, holds the 1-2 spot for swinging strikes among Mariners starters this year. It was exactly the sort of sustainable, repeatable start you’d want to see from a young pitcher, and I’m already look forward to reading more in-depth coverage of his outing in the days to come from savvier baseball minds than mine.

Seattle’s offense rose to the occasion early today against last year’s AL Cy Young winner, with two runs in the first, a run in the third and two more in the fourth. J.P. Crawford continued his resurgence with another three-hit day, while Kyle Seager and Jake Fraley both homered. The Fraley home run was nice, but the circumstances of him entering the game were decidedly less so.

Good news regarding Mitch Haniger (well, relatively).
Left knee contusion, deep bone bruise. Caught him flush.
Team and Haniger relieved by tests. Might be out a day or two, nothing definitive, though.

New ‘Ner Jake Bauers also showed off against his former team today, including an RBI single in the ninth inning that insured that when Kendall Graveman loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth on a walk, single and HBP, a grand slam would not tie the game.

As Sims reminded us at the end of the ninth, after Fraley captured the final flyout in his glove, “Breathe easy, folks. Breathe easy.”
