MSU Football current roster and scholarship situation - The Only Colors

tederes.blogspot.com

Following MSU’s Spring Game this past Saturday, Head Coach Mel Tucker has been holding exit interviews with players. As a result, several players have decided to enter the transfer portal. Determining the scholarship count has become rather difficult, in part due to recent rule changes adopted during the coronavirus pandemic. Regardless, I will try my best to clarify the circumstances based on my understanding of the situation.

Long Snapper (1): Hank Pepper (Fr.)

*Graduate Seniors who do not count against scholarship total (Allen, Arcuri, Beesley, Campbell, Coghlin, and Panasiuk): 6.

Total Scholarships: 91; 91 Total - 6 Grads = 85 (NCAA cap is 85 scholarships, minus non-graduates who remained at MSU).

^Early Enrollees (Russo, Fay, Walker, K. Allen, Horst, Boyd, Jordan, Brooks, & Gravely): 9. These 9 scholarships can be "backdated" to the previous Class as there are enough spots available based on prior roster construction.

Players in italics = "initial counters", which are new scholarship players to the program: 33.

33 "initials" - 9 early enrollees = 24 (NCAA cap is 25 initial enrollees).

If I have my math correct and am attributing scholarships to all the players, MSU currently does not have any more scholarship space available at the moment for another High School or transfer addition. That said, it’s almost a certainty another roster spot will open up soon.

If any more players leave the program, MSU would have 1 scholarship available under the 25 enrollee cap. Any defections beyond 1 cannot be filled with new players to the program.

MSU can provide Baringer or Hunt (or both) with a 1 year scholarship if enough scholarship positions (again, the maximum total scholarship amount is 85) open through attrition. Both are walk-ons who have previously been on the roster and would not be considered "initial counters" under the NCAA’s 25 enrollee scholarship cap.

If there are any errors, omissions, or holes in my logic, please provide a comment.
