  • Some parts of St. Vincent received 5 inches of rain in several hours.
  • The rain mixes with volcanic ash and debris and forms lahars.
  • La Soufriere volcano began erupting on April 9.

Heavy rain unleashed slurries of volcanic ash and debris that slammed into homes and damaged bridges in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Thursday.

The lahars are just one more misery on the Caribbean island nation caused by the eruptions of La Soufriere volcano.

In a matter of hours, the storm dumped 3 to 5 inches of rain on parts of the island, according to the National Emergency Management Organization. Another 2 inches was possible over the next 24 hours.

Seismologist Roderick Stewart, who is monitoring the volcano, told the state radio station the lahars lead to even more flooding because they block culverts and drainage and cut new paths.

“The actual danger from the volcano itself has lowered at the moment, but these sorts of secondary hazards — which are major hazards — are taking over for a while,” Stewart said. “This may well be the picture we have throughout the next rainy season. We could have this sort of hazard happening all the time.”

Damage reports included caved-in roofs and structures wrecked by landslides, the Associated Press reported. Bridges were also damaged, authorities said, and rural areas saw flooding.

High water made driving difficult in Kingstown, the capital city.

La Soufriere began a series of eruptions on April 9. Parts of St. Vincent island have been covered with heavy ash. More than 20,000 people have been forced to leave their homes.
