Don’t pack away that winter jacket just yet.

Most of Massachusetts is in for heavy rainfall, howling winds and chilly temperatures later this week, and across higher elevations, there’s even the potential for wet snowfall, according to forecasters.

“This is by far the most active period of the forecast,” the National Weather Service said in its discussion about the week’s forecast, “Much of New England deals with a late season storm, which will bring a period of heavy rain, gusty winds and even some wet snow to the region.”

Mild and dry weather is expected through Wednesday before widespread rainfall moves into the Bay State late Thursday and lingers until Saturday. Rain may be heavy at times, with over an inch possible across much of the commonwealth, according to the weather service.

For at least the first half of the day Thursday, much of Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island should stay dry, while the western half of the commonwealth and Connecticut deal with rainfall, forecasters said.

The most “dynamic and impactful” part of the storm will be from Thursday night to Friday, the weather service noted. The forecast is calling for quite an aggressive amount of moisture.

The weather service pointed out Massachusetts is “hurting for some rain,” though, as a significant portion of the state remains in a state of drought. Officials last week urged residents to take water conservation steps now.

The 1 to 2 inches of rainfall expected to hit New England later this week “will certainly help” the abnormally dry conditions reported in Massachusetts and elsewhere in the Northeast, according to the weather service.

The agency noted there’s still a great deal of uncertainty when it comes to the snowfall potential. However, the best chance for heavy, wet snowfall will be on higher elevations. Across the hilltowns of the Pioneer Valley, 1 to 3 inches of snow may fall, while up to an inch is expected on the Worcester Hills.

Heavy winds are also forecast. Gusts on Friday should reach 34 miles per hour on Cape Cod, 32 mph in Boston, 29 mph in Worcester and 26 mph in Springfield, according to meteorologists.

“Fortunately, astronomical tides are rather low, so [we’re] not looking at much of a coastal flood threat at the moment,” the weather service said.

Cooler temperatures are forecast later this week as well, with Friday night lows expected to dive to 42 degrees on the Cape, 37 degrees in Boston, 35 degrees in Worcester, 34 degrees in Springfield and 35 degrees in Pittsfield. Highs across the state will top out in the 40s on Thursday and Friday, according to forecasters.

By Saturday, the east-moving storm will slowly but surely dry out. Some scattered showers may linger into the afternoon before dryer weather arrives and lasts through Sunday. A surge of warmer air should bring temperatures back up to the 50s to end the weekend, and 60-degree weather is expected at the start of next week, officials said.

Another period of unsettled, rainy weather is forecast sometime around Monday and Tuesday, though the forecast is subject to much change more than 72 hours out, according to the weather service.
