SANTA CLARA — Police said they witnessed an exchange of more than 20 rounds of gunfire Wednesday night between two groups, one of which fired from a stolen vehicle.

Authorities are still investigating for a possible motive behind the shooting. No people were injured in the gunfire, but some vehicles were struck — leading to broken glass — as well as damage to the exterior of nearby homes, a police spokesman said.

Around 10:37 p.m., San Jose police officers were following up an investigation in Santa Clara when they witnessed gunfire being exchanged near the intersection of Kiely Boulevard and Ruth Court, a couple blocks from a shopping complex that includes a Safeway store.

One group fired from a vehicle and another was on foot. Later, Santa Clara police determined the vehicle was stolen.

Although police said the officers present followed the vehicle as it fled the scene Wednesday, they did not confirm if the officers made contact with the vehicle or if they were unable to apprehend it.

Santa Clara police spokesman Wahid Kazem said authorities have intentionally withheld certain details of the incident from the public, citing an “evolving investigation.” But he did confirm that no arrests were made in relation to the shooting.

Meanwhile, police executed a search warrant for a Ruth Court residence that authorities believe to be connected to the gunfire incident.

“The warrant was served peacefully with cooperation from the residents,” Santa Clara police said in a release.
