ROCKFORD (WREX) — Get your errands out of the way early Saturday. Snow arrives quickly Saturday afternoon, with heavy snow showers to follow. Roads become snow-covered in a hurry during the evening.
Saturday afternoon:
The start of the afternoon is dry and cloudy, but by 3 pm, showers move on in. Since we'll be a little above freezing at that point, the showers may start out as rain in a few spots.
Winter Storm Warnings from the National Weather Service go into effect at noon, but as mentioned above, showers may not hit until later in the afternoon. The warnings were issued to highlight the treacherous road conditions starting Saturday evening. Adjust your plans accordingly!
By the early evening, heavy snow showers kick in. We may see snowfall rates up to 1" per hour at times. Roads very quickly become snow-covered and slippery. Be ready for the rapidly changing conditions; it may be best to stay off of the roads at this point! Look for the heavy snowfall to last until the early overnight hours.
Stronger winds blow the snow around a little, making it hard to see in open areas. Some blowing and drifting is possible, making road conditions even worse.
Saturday night:
By midnight, the heavy snowfall starts winding down. Road conditions won't improve yet, as light snow keeps going throughout the night. Blustery winds continue to blow and drift the snow in open areas.
Closer to sunrise, the snow continues to wind down. We should either see light snow showers or scattered flurries by sunrise Sunday.
Most of the weekend's snow falls between Saturday evening and Saturday night.
Sunday:
Light snow showers try to linger for a while on Sunday. Showers either dry up Sunday morning, or stay stubborn into the afternoon. Either way, only 1" or so may fall Sunday. This won't add much onto the heavy totals from Saturday evening.
Watch out for slippery roads for a while Sunday, even after the snow stops falling. It may take a while for roads to get cleaned up, especially with the snow amounts on the way.
Winds remain breezy to blustery from the northeast, which may keep the snow drifts going in open areas.
Impacts:
In total, 5"+ is on the way with this storm. This includes the minor amounts on Sunday. 7" or more is a possibility, especially as you head eastward.
The snow is of the wet and heavy type. There is a ton of moisture coming with this storm, and temperatures are near freezing. This combination results in a wet snow, rather than one that is dry and fluffy. Be ready for shoveling to be difficult!
Next week:
The weather quiets down for a while at the start of next week. We'll see sunny weather early along with temperatures near freezing. Late in the week, milder air near 40 degrees may result in rain showers rather than snow. Keep an eye on next Thursday for the rain potential.
Late in the week, temperatures may crash. We could fall into the teens for highs by next week. Watch the forecast to see if the chilly continues to develop late next week!
