2020 was a trying year for everyone across the globe due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other extenuating circumstances. And while things are far from over, now is the time to look back, reflect and offer thanks to those who stepped up to help others.
Current and former members of the New York Giants certainly fall into that category.
In early December, Giants legends Eli Manning, Michael Strahan and Justin Tuck were among those who made an appearance at a Robin Hood charity event — Heroes of New York: A Robin Hood Special.
“Robin Hood’s work to elevate New Yorkers from poverty is more consequential than ever before. Because of the generosity of New Yorkers, we are providing relief through 600 frontline community partners who are feeding, housing, and caring for the city’s most vulnerable, while pushing for policy changes that will permanently remove barriers to economic mobility. As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in New York and throughout the country, we know our work is not yet done,” said Wes Moore, CEO of Robin Hood, via Giants.com.
There was also the Champions for Children Gala held by the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation in October, which was conducted in a unique and dynamic virtual setting.
The annual event, which raised approximately $1 million, saw appearances from Giants co-owner John Mara, former coach Tom Coughlin, Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, Victor Cruz and others.
“When 2020 commenced, the foundation kicked off the year with gratitude for 25 years of being a blessing in the lives of others, and as December draws to a close, we would be remiss if we did not end the year with that same sentiment,” Coughlin wrote in a thank you letter shared on FOX Business.
“The work that we do at the Jay Fund Foundation would never be possible without all of the individuals, companies, and organizations who have stepped up, particularly this year, and gave of their time, talent, and resources.
“I want to publicly thank each and every one of them. From the many coaches and athletes who helped us pivot in April to our first virtual event when we had no clue what we were doing, including Andy Reid, Jill Ellis, and Jerry Rice to our friends who announced our scholarship winners, including Craig and Lindsay Melvin, Elvis Duran and his side-kick Froggy, and Olympic swimmer Ryan Murphy, to those who stepped up to make our year-end gala a success, including the Jonas Brothers, our friends at the New York Giants, NASCAR and the PGA TOUR, and the many, many more who constantly say yes to help our families facing the unthinkable: THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts.
“Because of you, the 756 families we are currently serving are able to meet their household expenses. What a relief that is when your child has cancer.”
Future Hall of Famer, Eli Manning, also did more than his fare share, from joining the All In Challenge to pounding the drum for the Jay Fund Foundation to conducting a virtual USO Tour in an effort to lift the spirits of military families dealing with COVID-19.
Other current and former Giants who joined the “All In Challenge” include Saquon Barkley, Michael Strahan, Lawrence Taylor, Daniel Jones, Tiki Barber and Justin Tuck.
Manning took things a step further, offering his thanks to frontline workers on several different occasions and even surprising a few for Mother’s Day.
Victor Cruz was also a regular when it came to these events and other charitable endeavors. He donated hundred of computers to students in need and also partnered with Stella to benefit the New York Food Bank.
On Halloween, Giants rookies carried out an annual tradition when they dressed up in costumes and met with children at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack UMC.
Retired linebacker Mark Herzlich also made his presence felt by holding court with Jay Fund Foundation families, while one of the boys he inspired had the honor of ringing his cancer-free bell.
Expect to see more from these stars, the Jay Fund Foundation and others in 2021 and beyond.
