New cases in the last week did not rise to the level set by the record of 50 cases in the prior week of Oct. 9 to Oct. 16, but it was enough to come in as the second highest week since the first COVID-19 case in May.
Between Oct. 17 and Oct. 22, the Edgar County Health Department’s (ECPHD) webpage posted 34 new case. The website did not update in time on Friday, Oct. 23, to include any numbers from that date in the totals.
There were 14 lab-confirmed cases and 20 probable cases in the six-day period. People using the rapid tests are listed as probable because the Illinois Department of Public Health does not consider the rapid tests as accurate as the lab tests. People testing positive on a rapid test are still required to self-isolate, and the health department does contact tracing on them.
A demographic breakdown of the new lab-confirmed cases is: 1 female in the 0-9 category; 1 male in the 0-9 category; 1 female in the 10-19 category; 1 male in the 10-19 category; 2 females in their 20s; 1 male in his 20s; 1 female in her 30s; 1 male in his 30s; 1 female in her 40s; 1 female in her 60s; 1 male in his 60s; 1 female in the 70 and older category; and 1 male in the 70 and older category.
So far nine Edgar County residents have died of COVID-19. No additional deaths were reported during the course of the daily website updates. It is possible the death toll is higher as there is some lag time from when a death occurs and the numbers update.
According to the ECPHD, 293 people were considered recovered as of Thursday, Oct. 22.
The disease is having an impact in local schools.
Over the course of the week, school officials confirmed: a Mayo seventh grade student tested positive resulting in 34 other individuals being quarantined; a Mayo eighth grade student tested positive and 19 more people were quarantined; a Paris High School teacher and a long-term substitute teacher tested positive; a Paris High School student testing positive resulted in 22 other students getting quarantined; a staff member at Chrisman High School was positive and 34 people at the school were quarantined; a Tri-County Titans football coach tested positive which resulted in four people at Shiloh High School and four people at Kansas High School being placed in quarantine; Shiloh also sent a student home Friday, Oct. 23, with symptoms and that student subsequently tested positive later in the day; and a kindergarten section at Crestwood is in quarantine.
Mid-afternoon Friday, Paris 95 announced six people tested positive in the previous 48 hours, and those six positives resulted in 119 students and staff from Mayo and Paris High School being quarantined.
