Friday, November 26: Rough weather conditions have been prevailing over parts of Tamil Nadu for the past few days, and they may witness a notable intensification for the next 24 hours.
As per the latest forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate scattered or fairly widespread rainfall is set to prevail over the Southern Peninsula for the next five days.
Isolated extremely heavy showers have been forecast over parts of Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas Puducherry and Karaikal for the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the other parts of these aforementioned regions will experience isolated heavy to very heavy falls from Friday to Monday, November 26 to 29.
The districts of Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Nilgiris Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram and Nagapattinam are all likely to experience heavy to very heavy rains in this forecast period.
Chennai, the capital of the state, will be in for isolated heavy rains for the next 48 hours.
In view of these predictions, the IMD has issued an orange alert over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from November 26 to 28. This level of advisory instructs residents to ‘be prepared’ for inclement weather.
The incessant downpours have also prompted the state government to shut schools in 27 districts of the state, including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Madurai and Thiruvannamalai for today.
In Chennai, several areas like GSR road and T Nagar have already reported waterlogging due to heavy showers during the early hours of Friday.
This rainfall episode has been triggered by a cyclonic circulation brewing over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the south Sri Lanka coast. Strong northeasterly winds will also continue to gush towards the Tamil Nadu coast as well as south coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Meanwhile, since the beginning of the post-monsoon season, back-to-back episodes of heavy rains have drenched parts of South India during this northeast monsoon season.
From October 1 to November 25, Tamil Nadu (541.5 mm) and Puducherry (1107.5 mm) have both recorded ‘large excess’ amounts of rain as compared to their respective long term average figures for this time frame.
