Monday, November 22: Heavy rains have inundated several parts of South India, leading to a flood-like situation in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu over the last few days. The monsoon fury has claimed the lives of more than 40 individuals, while several others are still missing in Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The torrential downpour has caused widespread damage in districts, namely Chittoor, Kadapa, and Nellore. The fear was exacerbated when authorities reported cracks developing in one of the biggest water reservoirs in the rain-ravaged Tirupati district.
Latest rain forecast for southern states
Forecasts suggest some respite for Andhra Pradesh this week as no fresh downpour is likely across the region. However, a fresh cyclonic circulation could bring isolated heavy rains across coastal areas of the state by Thursday.
This week, much of the focus on heavy rains will continue over Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate scattered or fairly widespread rainfall over Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal the entire week.
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe are all likely to face the brunt of isolated heavy rainfall for the next five days. Meanwhile, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall could batter parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from November 24 to 26. An orange alert is in place over Tamil Nadu for Thursday and Friday, urging residents to ‘be prepared’ for adverse weather conditions.
The IMD has issued a yellow watch for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala in terms of weather warnings until November 24. After that, even coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema would be placed under this same level of alert, which instructs residents to ‘be updated’ on the weather.
Weekend rains disrupt daily life across South India
Heavy rains of over 60 mm lashed many parts of Andhra Pradesh on both Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, severe waterlogging led to several trains being cancelled or diverted. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded as the main road, and rail routes in Andhra Pradesh remained cut off due to floods.
Reports also highlight widespread damage caused by heavy rains. In one such incident, a road bridge, which connects Papagni to towns like Kadapa and Tadipatri towns, collapsed on Sunday. A 200-year old palace based in the Punganur district could not withstand the pelting rains.
According to officials, nearly 24 lakh people were affected by the floods. Heavy rains hit a total of 1,316 villages across Andhra Pradesh. The rains and floods damaged 1,549 houses and over 6.33 lakh acres of agriculture and horticulture crops.
Earlier this month, neighbouring state Tamil Nadu suffered severe flooding, where over 11,000 people were displaced and at least 14 died.
State of rivers
The latest reports indicate that Chitravathi, Papagni and Penna rivers were all in spate and continued rains could worsen the situation.
The Central Water Commission (CWC) has warned about the status of several rivers flowing in extreme flood situations and above the danger level. River Ponnaiyar in Krishnagiri of Tamil Nadu is flowing above danger levels, while similar observations have been obtained from river Shimsha in Mandya district and river Arkavathi.
Meanwhile, the river Palar at Vellore continues to flow in extreme flood situations today.
With the back to back heavy downpour episodes, all the states of South India have notched excess or large excess category of rains. Kerala (919 mm), Karnataka (336 mm), Puducherry (1098 mm) and Tamil Nadu (526 mm) are among regions to have recorded ‘large excess’ amounts of rains between October 1 to November 21. Meanwhile, in this same period, Andhra Pradesh has recorded an ‘excess’ amount of rain at 342 mm—39% more than its long term average.
