While the USA baseball team didn’t finish in first in the Olympic Games, It was still an impressive run.

The team failed to get a run across the plate in the gold-medal game early Saturday morning. Japan won 2-0.

Tyler Austin, former Twin and current Yokohama DeNA BayStars player lit it up in his first Olympic appearance. It worked out great because it was on his home field, but he was playing for the greatest country in the world. Austin actually lives about five minutes from the stadium, but he opted for the cardboard beds at Olympic Village for the sake of team chemistry and bonding.

Austin is #23 in the photo.

Just a quick refresher, Austin was part of the Lance Lynn trade, you know, the guy with the best ERA in all of baseball right now (of active players.) Minnesota then traded Austin to the Giants for Malique Ziegler who is currently in High-A with the Kernels.

Here’s Tyler’s statline from the gold-medal game:

AB R H RBI BB K BA OBP SLG

T. Austin DH 3 0 1 0 1 1 .333 .500 .333

OVERALL OLYMPIC PERFORMANCE:

In game one, Austin was 3-5 with 3 RBI and a HR. In game two he was 1-4 with 1 RBI. In game three Austin was 2-5. In game four he was 1-3 with 1 HR, 1 RBI. Game five, 2-4 with 2 RBI. In game six, the final game, Austin went 1-3. He was the team’s DH.

This means he finished his first Olympics 10-24. That’s a batting average of .417.

Joe Ryan also made a name for himself this Olympics. The games started with him getting traded to the Twins while he was allegedly at the breakfast table in Tokyo. He found out he was part of a trade for one of the best players in all of baseball, Nelson Cruz.

Ryan toed the rubber for the start in game one for Team USA.

In game one Joe Ryan pitched 6 innings of 1-run baseball giving up 5 hits, striking out 5. In game five Ryan started again, vying for a spot in the gold-medal game. He pitched 4 13 innings giving up 1 run, striking out 3, and that was good enough for Team USA to move on.

He is someone to be excited about.

Top-pitching prospect Simeon Woods-Richardson, who was part of the Berrios trade, was also a part of the team. He did not make an appearance.

Team USA was filled with former MLB players, current minor leaguers, independent leaguers, etc. because only those not on a major league 40-man roster were eligible to be named to the Olympic roster.
