If you're spending any time at a North Carolina beach in the next few days, you will want to stay out of the water, especially if you aren't an experienced swimmer.
Oak Island Ocean Rescue reported Wednesday that a father and son drowned Wednesday in a rip current.
The rip current danger is expected to remain high through the weekend.
Henri is still expected to stay off the Carolina coast but will pass close enough to shore that swells from the storm will create dangerous swimming conditions.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water that can pull even experienced swimmers away from shore.
If you get caught in a rip current, lifeguards recommend swimming in a direction parallel to the shore. Do not swim against the current. Once free of the rip current, swim back to shore at an angle.
