As Hurricane Henri gets ready to make landfall, New Jersey is in for some heavy rains and potential flash floods.

Though the hurricane is not expected to hit New Jersey directly, thunderstorms are predicted in parts of the state as early as 5 p.m. Saturday. That will be followed by rain overnight and into Sunday.

The weather is forecast to be the worst in North Jersey, which has the highest risk of heavy rain and flash flooding. But the National Weather Service in Mount Holly said there is some risk of flooding throughout the region, and tropical storm force winds are possible in Middlesex and Monmouth counties.

Heavy rain is also expected along the Jersey Shore starting Saturday evening.

Rainfall in N.J. by Weather Service

It is supposed to rain hard in New Jersey as Hurricane Henri bears down.

In Cape May, thunderstorms were expected to begin at 5 p.m. and to continue through the night, according to Accuweather. In Lakewood in Ocean County, they were forecast to begin at 5 and last much of the evening, with additional rain following.

In Newark, it was expected to begin thundering at 7 p.m. Same in Mahwah in Bergen County.

Henri was upgraded to a hurricane late Saturday morning. It is slated to make landfall Sunday afternoon in Long Island or southeastern Connecticut before continuing north into Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

While the hurricane is likely to miss New Jersey, it will produce rocky weather in the state. Forecasters predict the volume of rain will be the biggest concern and could reach up to 4 inches in parts of the state.

A tropical storming warning remained in effect for Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Monmouth, and Union counties. Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union counties could see winds between 30 and 60 mph Sunday morning into the afternoon that could also lead to power outages, that National Weather Service said.

Utility companies across New Jersey said they are preparing for possible outages caused by high winds.
