FIRST ALERT: Heavy rainfall could lead to possible flooding - WBRC

tederes.blogspot.com

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Heavy rainfall from thunderstorms may lead to localized flooding this afternoon. A few strong to severe storms are possible with damaging winds up to 60 miles per hour. Heat Indices may reach 105 degrees each afternoon from tomorrow through Tuesday so we will see these Summertime conditions continue as an area or high pressure to the west will continue circulating northwesterly winds over the region which means the possible development of these strong storm complexes with high rain chances for the weekend.

There is an extremely high moisture content to the atmosphere right now meaning there is the potential for very heavy rainfall with any storm which develops today. The main dangers will be from Flash Flooding with a Marginal Threat for damaging wind through the afternoon with the greatest threat for these damaging wind areas along and west of the I-65 corridor. This would become even more likely as a secondary ling of showers and thunderstorms develop during the afternoon. These storms will have the potential to develop into strong-to-severe-thunderstorms. Any prolonged period of sun will serve to increase the chances for strong storms.

By tonight the storms will diminish but another system will likely approach overnight meaning we may still see the development of scattered showers and some thunderstorms centered across the I-22/I-65 corridor. These storms will likely move through the area by mid-day tomorrow and heat will begin building. When coupled with the available moisture Heat Index Readings will likely climb into the 100 to 104 range while some locations may reach heat Index Readings of 105 or higher as early as tomorrow afternoon.

There will linger a chance for showers and thunderstorms redeveloping tomorrow afternoon with the greatest rain chances pushing to the south and east. A ridge of high pressure will begin building strength over the region tomorrow night and this development will continue for much of next week. The only lingering rain chances by the end of the weekend will likely be over Southeast Alabama while the ridge of high pressure will continue its influence over our region from Monday through Tuesday night leading to hotter conditions for the beginning of the week with afternoon Heat Index Readings in the 100-105-degree-or-greater range both afternoons. This level of heat can produce heat-related illnesses so be especially careful if you have outdoor activities.

Beyond mid-week, the ridge of high pressure will begin to weaken allowing for an advancing low out of the Atlantic to move west toward the Florida-Georgia-South Carolina coast and continue moving over The Southeast which will serve to enhance rain chances for Thursday and Friday.
