Colorado received its first snow of the season Thursday morning on Wolf Creek Pass. Friday morning, some snow fell much closer to Denver.
A weather station on Berthoud Pass reported “heavy snow” around 2 a.m. Friday. Webcams in the area later in the morning backed the claim as snow stuck to surfaces near the road on Fall River and Vail Pass.

While temperatures at the top of Rocky Mountain National Park dipped to around freezing Friday, the highs over the weekend for the lower parts of the park are forecasted to be in the 70s, according to the National Weather Service. Trail Ridge Road over the Continental Divide in Rocky Moutain National Park was closed Friday due to “whiteout conditions.”
Trail Ridge Road/US Hwy 34 through #RMNP is temporarily closed due to whiteout conditions and ice buildup (there was new snow up there last night). It's closed at Rainbow Curve on the east side & Milner Pass on the west side. It will reopen when weather & conditions permit. ks

August snow is not uncommon on Colorado’s highest peaks. These locations are some of the snowiest in the state, a reason why ski resorts are nearby. The snow is a reminder that escaping Denver’s recent heat is only a quick jaunt away.
Say it ain't snow! ❄️

Locations that received snow are about two miles high in altitude and about 30 miles west of the urban corridor.
