The Detroit Lions general manager search has been thorough thus far, but the latest news regarding this search is possibly even more bold than anyone could have possibly imagined.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Lions are planning to take a shot a current Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider. That’s right, they are going to try and pry a current general manager from one of the most winningest franchises over the past decade.
Why would Schneider want to leave his current job in Seattle? Well, as pointed out by Rapoport, he doesn’t currently have primary authority over personnel decision with the Seahawks. Head coach Pete Carroll currently does. And because of that, Rapoport says, the Lions could interview him if they offer full control over personnel matters.
Schneider has held his position in Seattle since 2010. Over that time, Seattle has drafted stars like Russell Okung, Earl Thomas, Golden Tate, Kam Chancellor, Richard Sherman, Bobby Wagner, Frank Clark, D.K. Metcalf, and, of course, Russel Wilson. Over that span, Seattle has produced an 111-63-1 record, won five division titles, had a 10-7 record in the playoffs, and won the Super Bowl in 2013.
Schenider’s experience goes beyond the past 10 years in Seattle, as well. He spent seven years in Green Bay, serving first as the personnel analyst to GMs Ted Thompson and Mike Sherman, then transitioning to the director of football operations. He also served in the personnel departments of the Chiefs (1997-99), Seahawks (2000) and Washington Football Team (2001).
Though this feels like a long shot for the Lions to sweep up Scheider from his current position, it is nice to see them swinging for the fences.
