Heavy rain on Sunday could cause localized flooding in Palmer and Wasilla into early Monday, a National Weather Service meteorologist said.

Early Sunday, areas in the Southern Matanuska Valley received about a half-inch to three-quarters of an inch of rain, with localized amounts up to 1.3 inches, said meteorologist Mike Ottenweller.

Rain was expected throughout much of Southcentral Alaska Sunday evening, Ottenweller said. The weather service issued a flood advisory for the Matanuska Valley because the additional rainfall could cause localized flooding overnight, he said.

The southern portion of the Matanuska and Susitna valleys were expected to see about a half-inch to three-quarters of an inch of rain by Monday morning, but some areas could see up to an inch of rain, Ottenweller said. The heaviest rain was predicted to fall near Wasilla, Palmer and toward Talkeetna, he said.

No significant river flooding is expected, but the weather service warned that poorly drained urban areas could see standing water.

Thunder and lightning were possible Sunday night throughout Southcentral Alaska, he said.

The rain was expected to slow in the early hours of Monday and Ottenweller said Southcentral Alaska will see a brief dry period, although rain is possible again Tuesday night or early Wednesday.

“It’s not necessarily going to be sunny and summer-like, but it should at least not be actively raining,” he said.
