UPDATE: Severe thunderstorm warnings issued as strong storms move across parts of state

The National Weather Service has issued flash flood warnings and flood advisories in nine areas of New Jersey where heavy rain has been falling Thursday, putting streets at risk of rapid flooding.

The first flash flood warnings — which are more urgent than watches — were issued shortly before noon in Gloucester and Salem counties in South Jersey, along with New Castle County in northern Delaware and parts of Chester and Delaware counties in southeastern Pennsylvania, effective until 3 p.m. Thursday.

At about 12:10 p.m., the weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for those same areas, saying a storm moving through the region could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph along with penny-size hail. The thunderstorm warning is active until 1 p.m. (See updates below)

Forecasters say a series of thunderstorms, sparked by a strong cold front that’s moving slowly from the west, are packed with heavy moisture and some are dropping rain at a rapid rate.

UPDATE (1 p.m. Thursday): At 12:55 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a special weather statement saying strong thunderstorms are still moving across parts of western Cumberland, northeastern Salem, northwestern Camden and Gloucester County.

Those storms are producing wind gusts up to 40 mph, which aren’t high enough to trigger a thunderstorm warning but still could knock down tree limbs or blow unsecured objects around.

The weather service says 1 to 2 inches of rain has already fallen in the areas that are under a flash flood warning.

UPDATE (1:45 p.m.): A flood advisory has been issued in northwestern Burlington County, northwestern Camden County, southwestern Hunterdon County, west-central Mercer County and southwestern Warren County, effective until 4 p.m. Thursday. The weather service says minor flooding is expected soon or has already started.

UPDATE (1:50 p.m.): A flash flood warning has been issued in northwestern Burlington County, northwestern Camden County and northwestern Gloucester County, effective until 6 p.m. Thursday. The weather service says between a half-inch and 1 inch of rain has already fallen in these areas, and the expected rainfall rate is 1 to 2.5 inches per hour. “Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly,” the warning says.

UPDATE (3:30 p.m.): A flash flood warning has been issued in Burlington, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris and Somerset counties, effective until 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The weather service says 1 to 2 inches of rain has already fallen in these areas, and another inch is expected during the next hour, posing a flooding threat for “small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, as well as other drainage and low-lying areas.”

UPDATE: (4:30 p.m.): A flood advisory (not as urgent as a warning) was issued for parts of Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Somerset and Sussex counties, where minor flooding has already occurred or is expected to occur soon. The weather service says a half-inch to 1.5 inches of rain has fallen so far in these areas.

UPDATE (4:40 p.m.): A flash flood warning has been issued for Middlesex, Morris and Somerset counties, along with northwestern sections of Monmouth County and southeastern Sussex County, effective until 7:30 p.m. Thursday because of heavy rain falling in those areas.

UPDATE (5:20 p.m.): A flash flood warning was issued for Essex, Passaic and Union counties, effective until 10 p.m. Thursday because of heavy rain falling in thunderstorms. Flash flooding has already started to occur or will occur soon near small creeks and streams, in urban areas, on highways, streets and underpasses, along with low-lying areas and places with poor drainage, the warning says.

UPDATE: (6:05 p.m.): A flood advisory (not as urgent as a warning) has been issued for Bergen and Hudson counties, effective until 10 p.m. Thursday because of heavy rain falling. Flooding is expected on urban streets and near small streams.

Flash flood watch

In addition to the flash flood warnings, a less urgent flash flood watch remains in effect in 12 counties: Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren now through Friday morning.

Forecasters say heavy rain could fall within a few hours, and that could trigger rapid flooding on streets with bad drainage and in areas near small streams and creeks.

Some areas of New Jersey are vulnerable to flooding because the ground has still not dried out from recent thunderstorms and the torrential rain that fell earlier this month from the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida.
