Sean McVay made a point to get DeSean Jackson involved on offense this week after he played just three snaps in Week 2 against the Colts. His plan worked as Jackson caught three passes for 120 yards and one touchdown, which came on a 75-yard bomb from Matthew Stafford.
He got more playing time in the Rams’ win over the Buccaneers on Sunday, while the other receivers’ snaps decreased slightly in this deeper rotation. On defense, it was a dime-heavy plan of attack from Raheem Morris’ unit, leaning on the secondary against the Buccaneers’ passing game; Tom Brady threw it 55 times to the running backs’ nine carries.
Here’s a look at the snap counts on offense and defense.
Offense
Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp and Van Jefferson were still the top snap-getters at wide receiver, but Jackson ate into their playing time a bit. Woods surprisingly led all wideouts with 57 snaps played, three more than Kupp and seven more than Jefferson. Jackson rotated in for 21 snaps, making the most of his opportunities.
At running back, Sony Michel played 48 snaps compared to Jake Funk’s 14. That means the Rams went without a running back on three plays against the Buccaneers, a rarity in Sean McVay’s offense.
Tyler Higbee saw a lighter workload against the Bucs, playing just 75% of the snaps after playing all of them in Weeks 1 and 2. This surely had to do with the Rams’ attempt to get Jackson involved, going four-wide more than usual.
Defense
The lack of playing time for Terrell Burgess remains a mystery. He played 21 snaps on special teams, but he once again didn’t get on the field with the defense for the second time in three weeks. He’s played just one defensive snap all year. Jordan Fuller and Taylor Rapp played every snap again, while Nick Scott played 31 snaps as the dime defender.
With how often the Bucs spread their offense out, the Rams leaned heavily on dime packages with six defensive backs on the field. That’s made evident by the fact that David Long Jr. played all but two snaps, with Jalen Ramsey and Darious Williams never coming off the field. So on nearly half of the defensive snaps, the Rams had six defensive backs on the field with Long and Scott joining the starters.
Kenny Young played every snap again as the primary linebacker. Troy Reeder’s role was limited by the game plan, playing only 16 snaps. The Rams had to get DBs on the field and it came at Reeder’s expense.
Along the defensive line, Aaron Donald and Sebastian Joseph-Day remain the primary defenders up front. A’Shawn Robinson only played 19 snaps and was in a rotation with Michael Hoecht and Jonah Williams. Greg Gaines subbed in for 24 snaps, a healthy workload for the big nose tackle.
Leonard Floyd and Justin Hollins played a bunch, of course, but Terrell Lewis saw his role grow, too. He played 34 snaps as a situational pass rusher, which is good to see and hopefully means he’s put the knee issues behind him – for now.
