Letter: Current council is anything but ‘moderate’ - Chico Enterprise-Record

I was unamused to see Kate Leyden’s recent LTE attempting to spin Chico city council actions and portray them as “moderates.”

A bit of background for those who may not have been engaged in these machinations:

Kate, of the Chico Builders Association, worked closely with Gallagher’s chief of staff and locally with Developer Tom van Overbeek to raise $250,000 to spend on developer-friendly candidates during the 2020 election. Along with Teri DuBose, the face of “Safe Chico,” they executed a strategy based on demonizing the homeless and whipping up the twin demons of hatred and division in the community. They succeeded, eliminating the previous (actually) moderate council.

In April, many of us pleaded with their hand-picked and paid-for council to renew the Emergency Shelter Crisis Declaration. It was pragmatic and gave the city flexibility with sheltering. Instead, they not only refused to renew it, but further instructed staff to stop working on sheltering solutions at the BMX site.

Make no mistake: Coolidge, Morgan, Reynolds and Tandon intentionally chose to violate the civil rights of homeless people in our community to satisfy the angry mob created by Leyden, van Overbeek and DuBose to feed their election strategy. Moreover, the council violated their oaths of office and failed to uphold the constitution.

It took a federal judge to force the council to fulfill their oaths and to take the pragmatic actions we recommended months ago. But Kate thinks you’re much too stupid to remember the council’s real actions. Let the spin begin.
