New York Yankees Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson, who now works as a special advisor to Astros owner Jim Crane, is one win away from returning to the World Series after Houston’s 9-1 win over the Boston Red Sox in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Wednesday.
Before the game, Jackson, a five-time World Series champion, talked to the New York Post and made an interesting confession.
“I’ve had two situations where I was able to get paid and watch my favorite player,” Jackson told The Post. “Derek (Jeter). And now the same thing, the guy that I like to watch in a game mostly now in a game is (Jose) Altuve. And I get paid.”

Jackson knows how to pick winners. Altuve ranks third all-time with 21 postseason home runs, one ahead of Jeter and one behind Bernie Williams.
But the diminutive second baseman isn’t Jackson’s only favorite on the Astros. He bestowed the title of Mr. October on Astros shortstop Carlos Correa after Game 4 of the ALCS. Per the Houston Chronicle:
“I’m doubly excited today. We had that great game and when I went back to the locker, he gave me one of his hats that he’s been wearing around. To me that was such a great honor. Reggie Jackson is such a legend of the game. Just giving me the hat that says Mr. October on the side, that was special to me so I’m really excited about that one, too.”
Yes, you read that right. Jackson wears hats with “Mr. October” stitched onto the side of the cap. And the 75-year-old thinks the Astros can ride Correa and Altuve to the World Series.
“They’re comfortable in the environment,” Jackson said of Altuve and Correa. “They’re comfortable in the environment. They were born in the environment. They expect to win. There’s no angst in the clubhouse. There’s no angst.”
In 72 career playoff games, Correa has hit 18 home runs. That’s the same total for Jackson, who did his damage in 77 postseason games. Of course, it’s worth noting that Jackson never had the luxury of playing in the Wild Card Game or American League Division Series.
