Kansas City's NWSL team has a new name: the Kansas City Current. The club revealed its name, crest and colors at halftime of Saturday's game against OL Reign, the final game of its inaugural season in Kansas City.
The name is meant to pay homage to the city's history and the team's future, which includes plans for a $70 million stadium and $15 million training facility built along the Missouri River. The crest features a river current and two stars, representing Kansas and Missouri. The team will keep the colors of its inaugural season, with teal, "heartland" red and "storm" blue appearing on the crest.
The Kansas City Current was selected from "hundreds of suggestions provided by stakeholders and fans through round tables, one-on-one discussions, Founding Member surveys and an in-stadium survey at the team’s first match," the team said in a news release.
"Every element is meticulously designed to tell the story of who we are, how we play and what we represent as a club," co-owner Brittany Matthews, the chair of the club's brand advisory council, said in the news release.
Kansas City entered Saturday's game 3-13-7 in its first season and in last place in the NWSL. The team relocated from Utah in December.
