High-voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) is a next-generation electric power technology to convert alternating current into high-voltage DC. HVDC cables are more advantageous for long-distance transmission and have less loss than conventional AC transmission. They can be used for expanding the acceptance of distributed power.
Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) said that a tape-cutting ceremony was held on October 27 in Gochang, about 220 kilometers (137 miles) southwest of Seoul, to open its test site that can carry out an experiment on the operation, performance, and specifications of ±800 kilovolt-class HVDC cables. Two HVDC cables can be tested at the same time.
"The world's best HVDC cable demonstration test site will help prepare for the future of our power system, enhance the international competitiveness of domestic cable manufacturers, and contribute to the expansion of renewable energy for 2050 carbon neutrality," KEPCO CEO Chung Seung-il said in a statement on October 27.
KEPCO said the new test site would enhance the competitiveness of homemade cables for exports because the certification period will be shortened by at least six months and the test cost will be reduced compared to international certification tests.
