Multiple flash flood warnings were issued overnight and continue into the Tuesday morning rush as a powerful nor’easter continues to dump heavy rain throughout New Jersey with storm totals above 6 inches now expected.
While the risk of severe thunderstorms has subsided, the National Weather Service expanded the flash flood watch to the entire state at 6 a.m. Winds are also expected to increase throughout the day.
UPDATE: A flash flood watch remains in effect across most of northern and central New Jersey until 5 p.m. Tuesday and in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties until 6 p.m. Tuesday. At about 9:30 a.m., the National Weather Service canceled the flash flood watch that had been in effect in Atlantic, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties in South Jersey.
Already, towns scattered throughout New Jersey have reported more than 3 inches of rain during the first 12 hours of the storm with Wayne in Passaic County topping the list at 3.72 inches, followed by Waldwick in Bergen County at 3.49, Kendall Park in Middlesex County at 3.43 and Howell in Monmouth County at 3.36 inches, according to unofficial numbers.
Up to 3 inches of additional rain could fall Tuesday after 8 a.m., the weather service said in its morning update. Most of the state will see another 1 to 2 inches of rain.
Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency in advance of the storm on Monday.
