Current three-game stretch among worst in school history - 247Sports.com

The last three games for the South Carolina Gamecocks have been historically bad.

South Carolina's experienced several stretches with three consecutive losses since the first one in 1908. The current run, under fifth-year coach Will Muschamp, could be among the worst, if not the worst. Might depend who you ask. Or who's old enough to remember.

Anyone around for that 2-7 team in 1916 might have something to say about Rice Warren, who oversaw a team that last 26-0, 27-0 and 33-7 to Tennessee, Clemson and Wake Forest, respectively.

Harry Litghtsey’s first and only South Carolina team was shutout by Virginia Tech, Furman and N.C. State, to close out the 1927 season. Those three teams scored 35, 33 and 34 against the Gamecocks.

In 1955, Rex Enright & Co. lost to Maryland, North Carolina and Duke: 27-0, 32-14 and 41-7, respectively.

Five years later, the Warren Giese led Gamecocks scored eight points over three games against Maryland, LSU and Clemson. That three-game skid was snapped by an 8-8 tie with N.C. State.

Marvin Bass’ fourth team (1964) lost three in a row to Nebraska, Florida and North Carolina. All three were on the road: 28-6, 37-0, 24-6.

Paul Dietzel’s first one closed out the 1966 season with losses to Florida State (32-10), Alabama (24-0) and Clemson (35-10). The Seminoles, Crimson Tide and Tigers combined for more than 700 yards rushing and nine touchdowns on the ground.

The Gamecocks were an Independent in 1971 when they lost 49-18 to Florida State, 24-0 to Georgia and 35-6 to Tennessee. Dietzel was still head coach.

His last season was 1974, when South Carolina dropped their first five games. The final three during that stretch: 52-14 to Georgia, 24-14 to Houston and 31-17 to Virginia Tech. The Dawgs, Cougs and Hokies combined to rush for more than 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns.

The Gamecocks were really bad against the run that season. Only one team threw a touchdown pass against them. No opponent attempted more than 20 passes in a game.

In 1985, Joe Morrison’s team had a run against Michigan, Georgia and Pittsburgh that was particularly bad. South Carolina lost 34-3, 35-21 and 42-7. Those three opponents accumulated nearly 900 yards on the ground.

The Sparky Woods and Brad Scott years had a handful of forgettable streaks. The end of the 1993 season was bad for Woods, who was replaced a year later by Scott.

It wasn’t quite as bad as 1995 during that stretch against the orange teams. Tennessee won, 56-21. It was Florida in a blowout, 63-7. Clemson rolled, 38-17. All three had more than 400 yards of total offense.

No matter how you slice up the 1998 and 1999 seasons, South Carolina’s 1-21 record remains as an all-time low for the program. Scott was coaching the 1-10 team. Lou Holtz was on board when the Gamecocks were 0-11 in 1999.

South Carolina dropped four in a row at the end of the 2003 season, which included a 63-17 rout by Clemson. The Ole Miss game started a four-game slide for the Gamecocks. The Rebels had more than 500 yards of offense. The Tigers had more than 500 yards, too.

The current stretch LSU (52-24), Texas A&M (48-3) and Ole Miss (59-42) has seen South Carolina give up more than 1,700 yards of total offense. The 513 yards Matt Corral threw for on Saturday night in Oxford topped the previous high against South Carolina, which Kenny Hill set in 2014 (511).

Opposing teams' stats, in South Carolina's record book, only go back to 1962. We'll assume nobody topped 500 before then, because there were only a handful to top 400 since then.

Under Muschamp, South Carolina has three three-game losing streaks. What’s scary is this one might be worst than one in 2019, when the Gamecocks dropped to Appalachian State (20-15), Texas A&M (30-6) and Clemson (38-3). The one in 2016 was more about inept offense, something most folks have come to expect from Muschamp’s teams. South Carolina lost 17-10 to Kentucky, before falling 24-13 to Texas A&M and 28-14 to Georgia.

South Carolina is scheduled to play Missouri on Saturday, Nov. 21. The Tigers are 2-3. Kickoff is set for 7:30.
