HACKENSACK, N.J. — Nearly three years in the making, the latest addition of luxury apartment complexes to complement Hackensack’s burgeoning revitalization into a modernized downtown for Millennials has arrived and is now leasing: The Current On River.
Situated at 18 East Camden Street on the site of the former Oritani Tennis Club abutting the Johnson Free Public Library and within walking distance of the Hackensack Performing Arts Center, the new over $70 million six-story complex inclusive of 254 rental units is one of many projects of the Hackensack Main Street Business Alliance which is bringing 3,000 units to the City in Motion in the coming years. The public/private partnership formed between the business community and the city 16 years ago with leaders around the country from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. invested in identifying and brainstorming creative solutions to improve their downtowns and thereby their overall business climate.
“Three years ago, I remember speaking to the name Current, and how it refers to the tidal waters of the Hackensack River and how fitting now that this project and many others now represent the new wave of people flowing into Hackensack,” said Hackensack Mayor John Labrosse.
Currently, a little under half of the units, which portray a transitional style, are being leased. Renters began moving in in April when the complex was first complete. However, the grand opening was postponed until Thursday, September 24 given the then-state-imposed lockdown by Governor Murphy amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
“I’m very excited to see this project come to fruition, and may I say in a timely fashion, literally beating out the pandemic by days,” said Labrosse.
With the motto, “Life As You Please,” developer Bryan Hekemian, who is the Chairman of the Hackensack Main Street Business Alliance and principal of Hekemian & Co., likens The Current on River designed by Hartman Design Group to up-to-date, resort-style living. Outside the complex are two courtyards — the north an entertainment space complete with barbecues and a lounge area, and the south with a swimming pool, sun deck, and comfortable outdoor seating around a fire pit. There is also a play area and grooming spa for pet dogs and cats. Inside the complex is a state-of-the-art fitness center and Club House. Bedecked in exposed brick and wood accents, there is a lounge area with stylish, comfortable seating, 96- and 54-inch flat screens in the main room and pool and foosball tables in an adjoining room with another flat screen. The lounge area serving complimentary coffee can be used as a place to retreat to do work if tenants are looking to do work outside their homes without having to travel too far.
“Our vision was to break the mold on apartment communities in the market,” said Hekemian.
The apartments range from 579 to 1,224 square feet with one and two-bedroom units, a kitchen, living area and two bathrooms. Each apartment is fashioned with stainless steel appliances, a washer and dryer and walk-in closets. The units, which have private balcony space, start at $1,950 a month for a junior one-bedroom, and $2,600 for a two-bedroom apartment. Configurational styles vary on the renter’s preference. Some units on the second floor, for example, have serene views of the pool, radiating a vacation house vibe, while others with views of the city library give off a more homey feel.
Ample parking is conveniently located on each level of the complex. In its vicinity are three supermarkets and restaurants along with the Shops at Riverside, an upscale shopping mall, the Ice House and the Hackensack University Medical Center.
“If you live on the fifth floor, just drive up to the parking garage and walk your groceries into your unit,” noted Hekemian.
The complex has easy access to an express bus, which is a 45-minute ride to Manhattan. Two train stations are located on Essex and Anderson Streets.
