We wrap up our summer roster rankings with the big dogs of the Milwaukee Bucks.
The top three guys on this list will come as no surprise, however, there could be a debate between the order of number three and two. Although I think there’s a clear answer, we can all agree that both players are essential to the Bucks if they want to return to their championship ways.
After starting at the bottom of the roster, lets rank the last (and best) three guys.
3: Jrue Holiday
Jersey no. 21; 6-3, 205 pounds, guard
Jrue Holiday helped the Bucks win an NBA Title in his first season in Milwaukee and instantly entered Milwaukee lore. He took over the point guard position from Eric Bledsoe and provided the Bucks with exactly what they needed.
He’s as good as they come defensively and probably doesn’t get as much credit as he should on that end of the floor. He can easily pester ball-handlers 94-feet from the basket, take on wings all over the court, and body with forwards down low. That type of versatility is extremely rare in the NBA.
He’s been an offensive stud in the regular season, setting career-highs in efficiency and nearly doing so in points per 36 minutes. He’s also set back-to-back career-highs from the three-point line in each of his first two seasons with the Bucks and it’s fair to wonder if that will regress closer to his career average in 2022-23. His postseason offense, unfortunately, has left a lot to be desired. He’s disappeared on that end for long stretches and has actively hurt Milwaukee with his lack of shotmaking ability. Hopefully, that trend reverses itself.
2: Khris Middleton
Jersey no. 22; 6-7, 222 pounds, wing-forward
The Bucks were cruising along in the postseason until Khris Middleton went down with an injury in the first round against the Chicago Bulls. Although the Bucks were able to continue dominating Chicago, they didn’t have the talent necessary to take down the Boston Celtics without their second-best player.
Middleton gives his squad a smooth shot-maker who can get buckets in the most difficult of times. He often rides the tough-shot express, as The Athletic’s Eric Nehm has dubbed it, and provides Milwaukee with a go-to buy late in close games. His ability to score at all three levels challenges a defense who already has to commit a ton of attention to Giannis Antetokounmpo.
His defense is average to slightly above average at this point, but his size is his biggest advantage on that end of the court. He can defend multiple positions and even play a small-ball four when Mike Budenholzer wants to go small with Antetokounmpo at center.
1: Giannis Antetokounmpo
Jersey no. 34; 6-11, 242 pounds, big
This is a no-brainer. The best player in the world is also the best player on his own team. Who would’ve thought?
The Bucks’ title chances run through Antetokounmpo and his ability to be the best player on the court. He was just that for most of the postseason, with the exception of Game 7 against the Celtics when he apparently ran out of gas. It appears even Superman has his limits.
Antetokounmpo gets better every single year and I’m excited to see what he adds to his game this year. He took more mid-rangers in 2021-22 and that looks to be the part of his game he’ll continue expanding. Defenses sag so far off him that if he can develop that reliable shot, it will go a long way to extending his dominance for years to come.
