STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Hours after smoke and flames tore through a set of homes in Charleston late Saturday night, neighbors commended the good deeds of emergency responders and civilians alike in ensuring the safety of those impacted. While one resident noted the blaze was like “deja vu.”
Nearly 150 firefighters, along with three-dozen pieces or FDNY equipment, were deployed to the vicinity of 82 Pitney Ave., where smoke and flames were reported just before 10 p.m., FDNY officials said. The 3-alarm fire ultimately spread to 84 and 86 Pitney Ave.; the former is adjoined to 82 while the latter is part of a separate building.
