Heavy rain leads to flash flooding at busy intersections in Springfield - KY3

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Several inches of rain in Springfield Friday evening led to several water rescues.

The rain hit around 4:45 p.m. It lasted for about 45 minutes.

Emergency crews rescued one driver whose car stalled out underneath the bridge at Commercial and Grant.

Heavy rain led to travel troubles at National and Chestnut too. A car stalled in the high water. The water rescue backed up traffic. Police reopened the road around 6 p.m.

“the water was probably halfway up to my leg,” said Larry Johnson, car flooded. ”I thought I could make it through, and my car got flooded out in the rain.”

”It’s a brand new car I just bought for my wife,” said Johnson. “She’s not going to be happy, but as long as I’m living, she’s going to have to deal with it.”

Johnson says he was shocked by how fast the water rose.

And water swept into the Professional Building at Cherry and Kimbrough. Crews worked through the evening to dry up the mess.

“It was all hands on deck to take care of things as quickly as possible to minimize the damage,” said Brad Kielhofner, Facilities Management MSU. ”Our custodial staff is here right now taking care of that water and getting it sucked up.”

MSU officials say water made it into some offices at the north end of the building.
