Scattered thunderstorms and heavy downpours are headed for Connecticut and the region as a cold front moves in late Wednesday into early Thursday, the National Weather Service said.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop as early as mid-to-late afternoon, with the worst of the storms expected between about 10 p.m. Wednesday and 2 a.m. Thursday, the weather service said.
There is a “marginal to slight risk” of flash flooding across southwestern Connecticut, as well as in northeastern New Jersey, Manhattan and the lower Hudson Valley in New York. The weather service said these areas are already seeing saturated grounds, high water tables and high rives and stream levels because of recent excessive rainfall last week as remnants of Ida slammed the area.
While no warnings have been issued for Connecticut, a flash flood watch is in effect for northeast New Jersey and parts of the lower Hudson Valley from Wednesday afternoon through early Thursday morning.
The weather service said about half an inch to 1.5 inches of rain is expected to fall across Connecticut, with up to 2.25 inches possible in a worst-case scenario. The weather service said an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out north and west of the New York City metro area.
The latest forecast shows it’ll be sunny on Wednesday, with a high around 82 degrees and a light wind in the morning. Showers and thunderstorms are expected at night, with wind gusts up to 21 mph possible and a low around 65 degrees.
Thursday morning brings a chance of showers, with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 77 degrees. A calm wind moves through in the afternoon. It’ll be partly cloudy at nigh, with a low around 60 degrees.
After the rain, the weekend forecast calls for sunny skies and warn temperatures.
It’ll be sunny with a high near 75 degrees on Friday, with a slight breeze. Friday night brings continued clear skies and a low around 56 degrees.
