MECOSTA COUNTY -- After two months of low COVID-19 case totals, Mecosta County ended the summer with 173 confirmed cases in August.
According to the District Health Department No. 10's monthly COVID-19 summary, Mecosta County had 173 cases in August, bringing the pandemic total to 3,226 through Aug. 31. For comparison, monthly totals for June and July were 27 and 16, respectively.
Of the 173 cases, less than half had a known source of exposure. Only 40% experienced symptoms, with cough (85.71%), loss of smell (57.14%) and loss of taste (57.14%) the most common. Almost two-thirds of positive individuals were younger than 40, lead by ages 0-19 (25% of cases), and 30-39 (25% of cases).
August began an upswing that continued into September. In the first 16 days of September, Mecosta County added 240 new cases and one death, according to DHD No. 10's daily report, for a total of 3,466 cases with 37 deaths since March 2020.
Mecosta County remains at a high community transmission level status, as laid out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Between Sept. 9-15, Mecosta County had 159 new cases and eight hospitalizations, with a positivity rate of 16.8%.
Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital reports nine COVID-19 patients with three patients in the ICU, making up 85% of its bed occupancy, according to michigan.gov/coronavirus.
Several schools have closed temporarily due to attendance issues and COVID-19 exposures. After a two-day closure of Morley Stanwood High School on Thursday and Friday, the district extended it through Friday, Sept. 24, as well as closing the middle school for the same time period. Crossroads Charter Academy closed its middle/high school, as well as first grade, Thursday and Friday. Earlier this month, Reed City closed its schools.
Statewide, 82 of 83 counties are in the high level of community transmission, with Sanilac County in the substantial range.

• Osceola County: High level of community transmission with 86 cases (Sept. 9-15) and an 18.33% positivity rate (Sept. 7-13).
• Lake County: High level of community transmission with 46 cases (Sept. 9-15) and a 12.8% positivity rate (Sept. 7-13).
• Newaygo County: High level of community transmission with 129 cases and nine hospital admissions (Sept. 9-15) and a 9.98% positivity rate (Sept. 7-13).
• Isabella County: High level of community transmission with 309 cases and three hospital admissions (Sept. 9-15) and an 11.78% positivity rate (Sept. 7-13).
• Wexford County: High level of community transmission with 49 cases and three hospital admissions (Sept. 9-15) and an 8.02% positivity rate (Sept. 7-13).
