N.J. weather: Heavy rain, strong thunderstorms could cause more flooding Wednesday - NJ.com

Parts of New Jersey still recovering from severe flooding associated with the remnants of Hurricane Ida could face more water worries on Wednesday as heavy rain is likely to fall in the afternoon and evening during strong thunderstorms.

While Tuesday will be a sunny, pleasant day with highs reaching the upper 70s and low 80s, Wednesday might bring 2 inches or more of rain to the state in the afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service said in its morning forecast discussion. In general, though, a half-inch to an inch of rain is expected.

The Passaic River at Pine Brook is still experiencing moderate flooding Tuesday morning with other sections of the Passaic as well as part of the Rockaway River and the Wanaque River near flood stage, the National Weather Service said.

“Given the very saturated soils from last week’s heavy rainfall, this poses at least some potential for flooding,” the weather service said.

Still, there’s just a marginal risk for severe weather with damaging wind gusts considered the main threat. The weather service said it decided not to issue flash flood watches yet, but may on Wednesday.

Forecasters say there’s a slight chance of rain Thursday on what otherwise should be a partly sunny day with temps reaching the upper 70s. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are shaping up as dry and pleasant with temps in the upper 70s to low 80s. Nighttime lows this week should be in the upper 50s to low 60.

Meanwhile, there’s a moderate risk of rip currents at the Jersey Shore on Tuesday and a high risk on Wednesday as Hurricane Larry churns in the Caribbean. Rough waves are the only impact the hurricane is expected to have on the United States as it moves north hundreds of miles off-shore.

Bermuda is likely to be impacted by Larry later this week.
