GLASGOW, Ky. – Friday at the Barren County Transportation Department, South Central Kentucky’s career team celebrated their partnership with Lake Cumberland CDL Training. They will start up the region’s first ever heavy equipment operation school in the region.

This opportunity will allow the community to unite businesses that need backhoe drivers, dump truck drivers or paver drivers with certified employees. It will also allow people to start up their own businesses with their certifications.

The training program is set to open this August, and there will be tuition opportunities offered with grant money.

Southcentral Kentucky Region Business Development worker James Moore said the opportunity is a great to take as backhoe certification only takes four weeks.

“One of the great things about having a facility like this and a training program like this in the community is that it’s a huge need in our community in this region in backhoe, your graders, your loaders and things like that. We have so many job openings. And the bad thing about those job openings this we don’t have a pipeline right now in this region for those to be placed into those type of job,” said Moore.

Lake Cumberland started a CDL training program this January in the region, and they’ve already had around 50 graduates with a 98 percent pass rate, so if those stats indicate anything, this heavy equipment training program should be a big success for the community.
