New Hampshire Public Radio staffers form union - Current

A group of staffers at New Hampshire Public Radio announced Tuesday that they are forming a union.

The staffers are seeking voluntary recognition of the union from CEO Jim Schachter, they said in a petition posted on Twitter. The group is forming the union with the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, which represents content staffers such as reporters and hosts.

“As we work together to keep up with our ambitious goals and our commitments to our audience, we need to make sure we don’t burn ourselves out in the process,” the staff said in the petition. “We need to make more meaningful changes to become a more diverse and equitable workplace. This will protect NHPR against continued employee turnover, but it will also make us — and our journalism by extension — even stronger.”

The push comes nearly a month after Schachter announced the station was ending its long-running program The Exchange, citing financial challenges.

Schachter did not respond to Current’s request for comment.
