Syracuse, N.Y. -- A hot, muggy day means more chances for potentially damaging thunderstorms in Upstate New York.

“Another round of strong to severe thunderstorms will move across the region this afternoon and evening,” the National Weather Service said. “The main threats from these storms will be damaging winds and very heavy downpours.”

Storms will be more scattered than they were Tuesday; trees were downed from Buffalo to the Hudson Valley, with the bulk of the damage in the Southern Tier. A 60 mph wind gust was recorded at the Binghamton airport, and more than 2 inches of rain fell at the Tompkins County airport.

The best chances for storms this afternoon will be in the Southern Tier, Hudson Valley and Catskills. There’s a 15% chance there of storms strong enough to cause damage.

More storms are expected Thursday, and those have forecasters concerned about potential flooding as the remnants of Tropical Storm Elsa move up the East Coast and spread over Upstate New York.

“Thursday, showers and thunderstorms will produce localized heavy rainfall.” the weather service said. “This, and recent heavy rains, will bring an increase to the potential for flooding through Thursday night.”

The areas at greatest risk of flooding are those that have been soaked by rain over the past month. Areas of the Mohawk Valley and the Capital Region have had more than 6 inches of rain over the past 30 days, about double the normal amount. Of the New York state Mesonet’s 126 automated stations, the highest rainfall total over the past 30 days was in the Oneida County town of Westmoreland, with 7.5 inches.

The weather service’s Weather Prediction Center says there’s a 10% to 20% chance of heavy enough rain on Thursday and early Friday to cause flooding.

Right now, the weather service is calling for 1 inch of rain in Central New York and 2 or more inches east of I-81.

The path of Elsa isn’t clear yet; the storm is just making landfall in Florida today. Forecasters expect it to collide with a storm system moving east over the Great Lakes, but when and where is still to be determined.

“Definitely still some difference and uncertainty in the details of how this will play out,” the weather service’s Binghamton office said.
