“He’s similar to some of the guys we’ve had in the past,” Hewitt coach Josh Floyd said. “I feel like maybe he’s closest to Noah. We did a lot of different things with Noah. He caught the ball. He ran it some. He played some Wildcat. That is kind of the guy Omari is. He can do a lot of different things.”
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Kelly and his teammates were in Coastal Alabama this week for the Foley 7-on-7 Shootout.
Kelly is currently the No. 14 senior prospect in the state, according to the 247 composite rankings. He and Anniston’s Antonio Kite are both listed as “athletes” and are the top two seniors in the state in that category.
“He’s a heck of a player, a multi-dimensional guy who can do a lot of things with the ball,” Floyd said of Kelly. “He’s done a great job trying to perfect his craft every year. He’s competitive so he’s a lot of fun to coach.”
As a junior, Kelly caught 39 passes for 710 yards and 7 TDs, ran 10 times for 40 yards and also returned eight kickoffs for 163 yards.
“My goal this year is to reach that 1,000-yard receiving mark,” he said.
Kelly visited Alabama, Auburn, LSU, UCF and Georgia in June.
“Georgia kind of set the bar because it was my first visit,” he said. “I was hoping everyone else lived up to that.”
Kelly also has offers from Notre Dame, Florida, UCF, Arizona State, Arkansas, Florida State, Miami and Michigan among other schools. He didn’t seem close to a commitment decision on Thursday.
Floyd said Kelly has had some college coaches talk to him about being a defensive back in college, but most see him fitting in at wide receiver.
