Kelly Jekot was putting together a special season in her return to the hardwood at Penn State, but it appears that has come to an end.
The former Cumberland Valley star did not play in Penn State’s 67-50 loss to Northwestern Sunday and, postgame, Nittany Lions coach Carolyn Kieger said Jekot will miss the rest of the season due to injury.
“We have a tall task ahead of us,” Kieger siad. “Kelly Jekot suffered a season-ending injury, not related to COVID, this week and we have to figure out how to make up for her scoring, minutes and rebounding.”
Jekot started all nine games she played in for the Nittany Lions and led the team in scoring with 15.9 points per game. She was second in rebounds with 61.
Jekot, a grad student, spent the first part of her career as a standout at Villanova, averaging 12.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game across three seasons. But she suffered a knee injury and announced in late 2019 that she was transferring to Penn State. She sat out last season following that transfer and rehabbed the injury.
Jekot made a quick impact for the Nittany Lions.
She scored 11 and broke the 1,000-point mark for her career in a season-opening win over Coppin State. She then scored her season-high of 24 points in the second game of the year against Saint Francis. She had 23 against Maryland on New Year’s Eve.
“Kelly has such a high IQ and shares the ball really well,” Kieger said. “We’re one of the youngest teams in the country, so when you lose that experience and lose that vet it’s going to hurt until we have time to re-group and figure it out. It’s going to have to be by committee. It’s not going to be one person doing it. It’s an awesome opportunity for them to step up, for them to grow and learn, and have their sisters’ backs.”
