5-Day Nationwide Forecast

Cyclone Tauktae, which intensified from a depression to a cyclonic storm during the late hours of Friday, May 14, was located north of Lakshadweep on Saturday morning, packing 40kt (about 75km/h) winds over north of Lakshadweep. The storm will gain more intensity while moving over the Arabian Sea, supported with high sea surface temperature of 30C and more.

The Cyclonic Storm is expected to track north-northwestward, off the Arabian Sea coast of South/West India before making landfall around Gulf of Kutch Tuesday as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm that could pack 118-165kmph wind speed, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Under its influence, heavy to very heavy falls at a few places with extremely heavy falls (≥ 20 cm) at isolated places are very likely over Lakshadweep, Kerala, Ghat districts of Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka, South Konkan and Goa over the next two days.

Rainfall activity is also likely to commence over Gujarat from Sunday, with a significant increase during the subsequent two days. Heavy to very heavy falls with isolated extremely heavy falls are expected over the coastal districts of Saurashtra next week. Heavy falls may also drench isolated places over southwest Rajasthan on Monday and Tuesday.

To the northeast, strong westerly/southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal will produce heavy rain across Northeast India and adjoining areas from Monday onwards.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperatures are likely to remain well below normal across much of India during this projection period. Rajasthan and adjoining areas will experience 8C and cooler than normal Tuesday into Wednesday. 45C or above maximum temperature is forecast for isolated areas of Gujarat this Sunday.

On the other hand, minimum temperatures will be 8C (or more) above normal across the Western Himalayan Region throughout this period, well above normal across coastal West India and Rajasthan earlier in the period, as well as across Northeast India later in the period.

2-Day Regional Forecast

Saturday

  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls are very likely over Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, while just heavy to very heavy falls will drench North Konkan, Kerala, Madhya Maharashtra. Heavy rains are on the cards over Rayalaseema.
  • Widespread rains with thunderstorms are expected over Konkan & Goa, Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala & Mahe and Lakshadweep.
  • Fairly widespread rains with thunderstorms have been forecast over Madhya Maharashtra, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and North Interior Karnataka.
  • Scattered rains with thunderstorms are likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Marathwada, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Telangana.
  • Isolated rain/snow with thunderstorms are expected over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Isolated rains with thunderstorms are possible over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, West Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Vidharbha and Chhattisgarh.
  • Maximum temperatures could be above 40°C in some places of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Sunday

  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted over Konkan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and Kerala & Mahe. Heavy rains are very likely over Saurashtra & Kutch, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Rayalaseema and Lakshadweep.
  • Widespread rains with thunderstorms are on the cards over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal Karnataka, Kerala & Mahe and Lakshadweep.
  • Fairly widespread rains with thunderstorms are in the forecast over Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, and Interior Karnataka.
  • Scattered rains with thunderstorms are expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, West Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Telangana.
  • Isolated rain/snow with thunderstorms are likely over Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Isolated rains with thunderstorms are possible over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Vidharbha and Chhattisgarh.
  • Maximum temperatures are likely to be above 45°C in some places of Gujarat, above 40C in some places of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
