UND chasing the Cup: Poolman, Forbort play heavy penalty kill minutes as Jets even series - Grand Forks Herald

Jets coach Paul Maurice said he believed the hit, in which Tkachuk cut the back of Scheifele's leg with his skate, was intentional.

Not surprisingly, Game 2 was heated and turned into a penalty fest.

Nearly a third of the game -- 19:14 of 60 minutes -- was spent on the power play. Each team had six opportunities.

That meant heavy lifting for Winnipeg's Tucker Poolman and Calgary's Derek Forbort, a pair of defensemen who played three seasons at UND before heading to the NHL.

The Jets were victorious in the game, winning 3-2 to even the best-of-five series at 1-1, despite missing three regular forwards -- Scheifele, Patrik Laine and Mason Appleton.

Poolman played 3:19 of shorthanded time alone for Winnipeg and 13:54 for the game.

Forbort played a whopping 5:10 shorthanded and 18:38 in the game. Forbort's shorthanded ice time included the first 1:49 of a Winnipeg five-on-three power play in the second period.

Both teams were excellent on the penalty kill, allowing just one power-play goal in 12 chances. That power-play goal went to Winnipeg in the third period and was the game's decisive goal.

Game 3 is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. today.

Blackhawks fall with Caggiula out

Dave Tippett's Edmonton Oilers struck back against the Chicago Blackhawks to win 6-3 in Game 2 and even their best-of-five series 1-1.

Edmonton's Connor McDavid had a hat trick in the game.

Chicago played without former UND star Drake Caggiula, who was serving a one-game suspension due to a hit to the head in Game 1. Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, who starred in Game 1 with two goals and an assist, was held off the scoresheet in Game 2.

Game 3 is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Oshie gets started

The Washington Capitals have already earned their spot in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. They're just playing a round robin against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers for seeding purposes.

T.J. Oshie finally got his feet wet in the Toronto hub on Monday as his Capitals lost to the Lightning in a shootout.

Oshie, who famously starred in USA's shootout win over Russia in the 2014 Olympic Games, scored on his shootout attempt. Oshie played 15:50, had two shots on goal and got into a fight with Yanni Gourde.

No update on Schmaltz

Arizona Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet did not have an update Monday on former UND forward Nick Schmaltz, who missed Game 1 with an injury he sustained on a hit to the head by Vegas forward Ryan Reaves last week in an exhibition game.

The Coyotes are scheduled to play Game 2 at 1:30 p.m. today.

Tuesday's games

11 a.m. -- New York Islanders (Brock Nelson) vs. Florida Panthers, NBC Sports (Islanders lead series 1-0)

1:30 p.m. -- Arizona Coyotes (Nick Schmaltz) vs. Nashville Predators (Rocco Grimaldi), NHL Network (Coyotes lead series 1-0)

3 p.m. -- Toronto Maple Leafs (Dave Hakstol) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets, NBC Sports (Blue Jackets lead series 1-0)
