Presbyterian Christian is hoping to get its first win of the season against Lamar. Lamar finished 8-4 last season and opened the year with a 33-30 overtime win over Starkville Academy. The game will played at Pearl River Community College.

“We are excited to play against a very good Lamar football team that played against Starkville academy,” PCS coach Derek White said. “They are a very big football team that is very athletic and are very good on defense.”

Last season, PCS lost its game to Lamar on the road in a 51-43 thriller. In Lamar’s game last week, the Raiders over come a two-possession deficit in the second half to come out with the win. According to White, the key to Lamar’s success is its passing game.

“Lamar has always loved to throw the football,” White said. “They have had some great quarterbacks. I really think everything starts for them with the quarterback run game with the power run and power read. I think it all starts there. Then you start trying to stop the run, and then they are okay with screens and throwing short routes, which eventually leads to the deep routes. They will take what you give them. They are okay with being methodical and doing it. They are really good at it. They are a well-coached football team.”

Lamar’s senior dual-threat quarterback Will Morris leads the offense. Last year, Morris threw for 16 touchdowns and 1,764 yards and ran for 115 yards and three touchdowns.

Morris notably took a hit in last week’s game that took him out of the game against Starkville for a significant amount of time. Despite the injury, Morris finished the game 10-of-16 and passed for 237 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 50 yards.

“Their quarterback took a bit of a blow Friday night,” White said. “They threw the (back up quarterback) in when their quarterback got beat up, but he’s back. He played later on in the game. He was their quarterback last year and is a heck of a football player. He throws the ball well and runs it even better. Their quarterback does so much. He is a great guy in the run game and distributes it to a lot of different people.”

Complimenting Morris is senior wide receiver Miller Hodge, who caught eight passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns. According to White, however, the Raiders have several talented wide receivers.

“They have really good receivers,” White said. “The thing that they do is run great routes. They don’t mess up.”

At the same time, White also believes that Lamar’s defense could pose bigger problems than its offense.

“Defense for them is going to be a tough task for us,” White said. “They have a nose guard that is 6-foot-6 and 300 pounds. They have two more guys that are 300 pounds. They have two outside linebackers that can make tackles all night long. It’s going to be a big challenge for us.”

In preparation for the upcoming game, White has placed significant emphasis on his wide receivers who dropped several notable, game-changing balls as well as a game-tying touchdown. In addition to needing more efficiency from his receivers, he will need them to create more explosive plays and help quarterback Collin Neicase.

“Collin threw the ball really well Friday night,” White said. “We had three long balls that were dropped. We dropped touchdowns. Those are the big plays that I’m talking about. We need our receivers to make plays to give him more of an opportunity for more time. Also, our offensive line didn’t do really well in the pass protection. He had someone in his face all night. He threw the ball well, and a lot of his incompletions were when he had someone in his face. He has gotten very smart and is avoiding sacks and throwing the ball away.”

As of now, White believes that his defense played poorly against a talented Escambia Academy team, but that the biggest improvements will need to come from the offense.

“We need to have some explosive plays when we get an opportunity,” White said. “We need to get some stops and turnovers. We are going to tweak a little bit, but we are still going to run the football on offense.

“After watching film on Monday, we didn’t play very good, and we still had a chance wholeheartedly. There is a lot of work to do, and we can improve a whole lot.”
