New Jersey is expected to get some much-needed rain on Wednesday, but it could come in the form of nasty thunderstorms.
Forecasters from the National Weather Service and AccuWeather say there’s a threat of strong to severe thunderstorms sweeping across our region during the afternoon and evening, with 90-degree temperatures and high humidity helping to fuel the storms coming from the west.
Some of the thunderstorms could pack damaging winds, small hail and heavy downpours, forecasters said. Although an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out in the Garden State, it’s more likely one could spin up north of our region.
Forecasters from the weather service’s Mount Holly office said afternoon temperatures should soar to 90 degrees or close to 90, and not all areas of the state are a lock to get rain or thunderstorms. However, the storms that develop could become strong to severe, especially if the atmosphere becomes more unstable in the afternoon.
The wet weather is expected to clear up by midnight, and Thursday is shaping up to be the nicest day of the week, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures hovering in the low 80s.
The long Memorial Day weekend, however, will likely get off to a wet start, with a high probability of rain showers on Friday and Friday night, forecasters say. Depending on how slowly the storm system moves away, some showers could linger into Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon.
As of now, forecasters are expecting Sunday to be mostly sunny but cool, with daytime temperatures only in the 60s — about 5 to 10 degrees below normal for late May — and overnight lows in the low 50s.
Monday, the day Memorial Day is celebrated, is shaping up to be mostly sunny with highs in the mid-70s inland and near 70 degrees at the Jersey Shore.
