Wednesday, May 19: The worst may be over with Cyclone Tauktae, but its impact will continue to be felt for the next 48 hours—especially in parts of North and Northwest India.
Tauktae has already weakened into a depression, and as of Wednesday morning, it was located over southeast Rajasthan, about 30 km south-southwest of Udaipur. This remnant system will gradually weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area by Wednesday night, and move further northeastwards, across Rajasthan to Uttar Pradesh, over the next two days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression is likely to interact with a western disturbance—a storm that originates as a low-pressure system over the Mediterranean Sea and gets pushed towards North India by high-altitude westerly winds—that currently lies over Jammu & Kashmir. Furthermore, the depression will also pull high moisture content from the Arabian Sea to Northwest India, effectively producing more rainfall over the region for the next two days.
While most parts of northwest India have received normal rains so far this pre-monsoon season, Delhi has remained extremely dry. The capital city has registered a mere 11 mm rainfall since March 1, which represents a 70% deficit in seasonal rainfall.
Heavy rains to continue over north India until May 20
As a result of the aforementioned meteorological conditions, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity will continue over North and Northwest India (except Jammu & Kashmir).
On Wednesday, May 19, the IMD has forecast:
- Heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy falls at isolated places over Uttarakhand
- Heavy to very heavy showers at isolated places over northwest Uttar Pradesh
- Heavy rains at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, the rest of Uttar Pradesh, northeast Rajasthan and north Madhya Pradesh
- Light to moderate thundershowers over Delhi-NCR
By Thursday, May 20, the rainfall activity over the region will start to decrease. Accordingly, the IMD has predicted:
- Heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places over Uttarakhand
- Heavy rainfall at isolated places over West Uttar Pradesh
- Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand
- Isolated to scattered showers over all the other parts of Northwest India
Come Friday, May 21, the rainfall activity over the region will decrease significantly.
Expected impact of heavy rainfall
Considering the intensity of the predicted rainfall, the IMD’s regional met centre in New Delhi has issued a red warning over Uttarakhand on Wednesday and an orange alert on Thursday, along with an orange alert over West Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. While the red warning instructs residents to ‘take action’ and protect themselves from the extreme conditions, the orange alert urges them to ‘be prepared’ for rough weather.
Therefore, in these two states, the people must prepare for the following impact:
- Localised flooding of roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in hilly and urban areas
- Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall
- Disruption of traffic in cities due to waterlogging on roads
- Minor damage to kutcha roads
- Possible damage to vulnerable structures
- Localised mudslides (for plain areas) and landslides (for hill and vulnerable areas)
- Damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation
In view of the expected impact, the IMD has advised the residents to take the following actions:
- Check for traffic congestion on your route before leaving for your destination
- Follow any traffic advisories that are issued in this regard
- Avoid going to areas that face waterlogging problems often
- Avoid staying in vulnerable structures
