Saturday, May 15: As Cyclone Tauktae continues its movement northwards while intensifying and becoming more severe, the system is set to influence the weather across Coastal Maharashtra and Goa over the next 2-3 days. Accordingly, multiple heavy rain alerts have been issued across the West Indian state.

As per the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) latest forecast update, Cyclonic Storm Tauktae was located over east-central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea, about 330 km south-southwest of Panjim-Goa, at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.

The system is expected to intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by Friday evening, and into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm during the subsequent 12 hours. As it intensifies, Tauktae is likely to continue its movement north-northwestwards, and make landfall over Gujarat, between Porbandar and Naliya, by Tuesday afternoon/evening.

Heavy rains forecast across the Maharashtrian coast

As Cyclone Tauktae heads north-northwestwards, it will pass by the Maharashtrian coast, effectively causing heavy rainfall activity in the coastal areas.

On Saturday, the IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy showers at a few places over South Konkan & Goa, and at isolated places over North Konkan. Come Sunday, the entire coastal Maharashtrian region, along with the adjoining Ghat areas, may witness heavy to very heavy falls at a few places. Most other places near the coast, meanwhile, will experience light to moderate rainfall.

The IMD’s regional met centre in Mumbai has forecast heavy to very heavy rains at a few places across the districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg on Saturday, while isolated heavy showers will be on the cards over Raigad, Kolhapur and Satara.

On Sunday, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg will continue to experience heavy to very heavy falls at a few places, whereas isolated heavy rainfall will drench the districts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Kolhapur, Satara and Sangli.

As per The Weather Channel’s 10-day forecast, the chances of rains and thunderstorms over Mumbai will be as high as 58% on Sunday, but will rise further to 77% on Monday. The weather across the state capital will also be windy on Sunday and Monday, with south-southeast winds blowing at speeds of 48 km/h on the horizon.

Meanwhile, the southern Maharashtra and Goa coasts will be bombarded by squally winds that reach the speed of 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph on Saturday; and gale winds up to 60-70 kmph, gusting to 80 kmph across the state’s coastal region on Sunday.

As the coastal areas remain on high alert, all rescue and relief agencies are fully prepared to tackle any eventualities. The NDRF has deployed three teams in Mumbai, 15 in Pune, and one in Goa. However, officials are optimistic that Maharashtra may escape the full fury of the cyclone, as current forecasts suggest it may pass around 250 km away from the Maharashtrian coast in the Arabian Sea.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has also reviewed the situation and asked the people and the government machinery to be vigilant, rekindling memories of the devastating Cyclone Nisarga that pounded Raigad-Ratnagiri in June 2020, at the height of the pandemic lockdown.

"In a preparatory meeting regarding Cyclone Tauktae on Friday night, Thackeray has instructed all Divisional Commissioners and district Collectors to be vigilant and well-equipped in coastal areas, especially in Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg," informed an official of the CMO.

As per Uday Samant, Minister for Higher & Technical Education, the state has also made preparations to ensure the cyclone has no impact on the COVID-19 patients across Maharashtra. He stated: "We have also made special arrangements for hospitals and COVID-19 care centres, arranged backup generators for oxygen plants, fleets of ambulances deployed in case patients need to be evacuated and other requirements."
